Mastering plugins sell on promises: louder, clearer, finished in one click. The good ones help you make a few careful decisions at the end of a mix and then get out of the way. This guide covers the six mastering tools most worth buying in 2026, what each one is best at, where each falls short, and whether to buy now or wait for Black Friday.

Prices below were read from Plugin Boutique and Best Service on 26 October 2026, in US dollars. Several of these tools are already on sale until 1 November, which is a month before Black Friday on 27 November. Live offers will appear on our Black Friday mastering plugins page and the limiter plugins page as they go live.

Quick picks

1. iZotope Ozone 12: best all-in-one mastering suite

Ozone is the default mastering suite for a reason: it covers every stage of a modern chain in one window and adds tools nobody else has. Ozone 12 Standard has 14 editable modules in the Ozone host plugin, including Equalizer, Dynamic EQ, Dynamics, Exciter, Imager, Match EQ, Master Rebalance, Stabilizer, the Vintage EQ, Compressor, Limiter and Tape modules, the Maximizer with the new IRC 5 limiting mode, and the new Bass Control. Advanced raises that to 20 modules, adds Clarity, Impact, Low End Focus, Spectral Shaper and the two headline Ozone 12 tools: Stem EQ, which lets you EQ vocals, bass, drums and instruments separately inside a stereo bounce, and Unlimiter, which uses machine learning to restore transients to an over-compressed file. Only Advanced lets each module load as a separate plugin, and it adds Stem Focus, Codec Preview and the Relay plugin. Both include the AI Master Assistant with the new Custom flow, where you choose a genre target, the modules to use and a loudness goal. More detail on our Ozone 12 Advanced page.

Weaknesses: it is easy to over-process with Ozone, because the Assistant can build a busy chain on a mix that needed two moves. Advanced is CPU-heavy at high quality settings, and Stem EQ and Unlimiter, the most impressive features, are Advanced-only. The plugins are 64-bit VST3, AU and AAX, with VST2 no longer supported.

Price: Standard is $219 at Plugin Boutique and $205.99 at Best Service. Advanced is $499 at Plugin Boutique and $469.35 at Best Service. Ozone 12 Advanced is also part of iZotope Music Production Suite 9, which our plugin bundles guide covers. See the iZotope Black Friday page.

2. FabFilter Pro-L 2: best limiter

Every master ends with a limiter, and Pro-L 2 is the one many engineers trust most. It has eight limiting algorithms, from the clean Transparent and Modern styles to the punchier Aggressive and Bus, true peak limiting, up to 32x linear-phase oversampling, and loudness metering for the EBU R128, ITU-R BS.1770-4 and ATSC A/85 standards. The real-time level display shows exactly where gain reduction happens, which makes it easy to hear and see when you have pushed too far. It also handles surround and immersive formats up to Dolby Atmos 9.1.6, and comes as VST, VST3, AU, CLAP, AAX and AudioSuite.

Weaknesses: it is a limiter and nothing else, so you still need EQ, compression and imaging elsewhere. It has no assistant or auto-loudness targeting, and $199 is a lot for one stage of the chain.

Price: $199 at Plugin Boutique. Best Service has it at $169 today, the lower price of the two. Price-timing note: last Black Friday, FabFilter's discount at Plugin Boutique was about 24 percent across the range, including Pro-L 2. Discounts this small mean waiting saves you about $50, not half the price. See our FabFilter Black Friday page.

3. Mastering The Mix FASTER MASTER: best for fast masters

FASTER MASTER is built for producers who want a good master quickly and do not want to learn a 20-module suite. Put it last on your master bus, play the loudest section and click Analyze. It then offers ten tailored presets, or a profile built from a reference track you import. From there you get five simple modules: EQ, Transients, Compress (Off, Light, Dynamic or Tight, with a low-cut sidechain), Stereo width across four frequency ranges, and Limit with drive, ceiling and optional true peak. Every change is loudness-matched, so bypass tells you whether you made the track better or only louder.

Weaknesses: the simplicity is the limit. There is no multiband dynamics, mid/side EQ or detailed limiter control, so engineers who master for clients will outgrow it. It suits finishing your own tracks, demos and quick club tests more than critical album work. It runs as 64-bit AU, VST3 and AAX on macOS 10.15 or later and Windows 10 or later.

Price: $80 at Plugin Boutique. Mastering The Mix sells it direct for £59 with its Mastering Essentials bundle (EXPOSE 2, LEVELS and LIMITER) included free. Our FASTER MASTER plugin page has the full spec.

4. SSL Native Bus Compressor 2: best bus compressor for mastering

A bus compressor is not strictly a mastering plugin, but a gentle couple of decibels of glue before the limiter is part of many mastering chains, and the SSL G-Series bus compressor is the classic tool for it. SSL's own Native Bus Compressor 2 models that centre-section compressor and adds what the hardware lacked: a wet/dry mix for parallel compression, a sidechain high-pass filter so the kick does not drive the compression, and new attack, release and ratio options. It integrates with SSL 360 and SSL's UC1 and UF8 control surfaces.

Weaknesses: it does one job. On dense mixes, pushing it past light gain reduction pumps audibly. It needs a free iLok account.

Price: $19 at Plugin Boutique until 1 November, 87 percent off its $149 list price. Best Service lists it at $149. If you want more SSL colour, the SSL Fusion Bundle is $49.99 at Plugin Boutique until 1 November (list $495), and the same $49.99 at Best Service. It models the five circuits of SSL's Fusion stereo outboard processor: Vintage Drive, Violet EQ, HF Compressor, Stereo Image and Transformer. See the SSL Black Friday page.

5. Softube Weiss MM-1: best one-knob maximizer

Weiss hardware sits in mastering rooms around the world, and the MM-1 Mastering Maximizer puts the algorithms of the Weiss DS1-MK3 behind one Amount knob. Pick one of five styles (Transparent, Loud, Punch, Wide or De-ess), turn the knob, and the filtering, compression and limiting under the hood scale together. A mix control blends in the dry signal. It is licensed and endorsed by Daniel Weiss.

Weaknesses: you trade control for speed. There are no attack, release or threshold controls, and no detailed metering compared with Pro-L 2. If you want to tweak the Weiss sound, the full DS1-MK3 is the tool for that. It needs a Softube account and iLok.

Price: $59 at Plugin Boutique until 1 November, 70 percent off its $199 list. That is the lowest price in this guide for a mastering-grade limiter. See our Softube Black Friday page.

6. Softube Limit Pro: best Pro-L 2 alternative

Limit Pro is Softube's new true peak limiter, and it is the most direct rival to Pro-L 2. It gives you three peak suppression methods: Standard, Adaptive (which slows down to spare low frequencies) and Fast (which sits close to clipping). Release can follow transients or adapt by frequency, Low Frequency Protection handles limiting in the sub-bass, and metering covers true peak, LUFS, loudness loss and a distortion view. Gain Match and delta monitoring let you hear what the limiter removes. The simpler Limit Go is included. Our Limit Pro first look goes deeper.

Weaknesses: it is not an immersive or Atmos limiter, so Pro-L 2 stays the choice for surround work. It needs a Softube account and iLok.

Price: $99 at Plugin Boutique until 7 November, down from $149.

Which mastering plugin should you buy?

If you master your own tracks and want one purchase, buy Ozone 12 Standard. It covers EQ, dynamics, imaging and limiting, and the Assistant gives you a sensible starting point. Step up to Advanced only if you need Stem EQ or Unlimiter to fix mixes you cannot reopen.

If you already have EQ and compression you like, the limiter is where to spend: Pro-L 2 is the safe choice, and Limit Pro at $99 is the value pick until 7 November.

If you want finished-sounding masters with minimal effort, FASTER MASTER or Weiss MM-1. FASTER MASTER guides you through a full chain. MM-1 is a single knob on the end of yours, and at $59 until 1 November it is the cheapest way into mastering-grade limiting.

If your mixes sound loud but flat, add SSL Bus Compressor 2 before the limiter. At $19 until 1 November, there is little reason to wait.

Who should skip a mastering plugin

If your music is going to a mastering engineer, you do not need any of these beyond a limiter for reference bounces. And if your mixes have problems, such as a muddy low end, harsh vocals or a kick fighting the bass, fix them in the mix first. A mastering plugin will make a good mix sound finished, but it cannot rebuild a balance.

FAQ

What is the best mastering plugin in 2026?

For most people, iZotope Ozone 12 Standard at $219 is the best single mastering plugin, because it covers the whole chain. If you only need a final limiter, FabFilter Pro-L 2 at $199 is the standard choice.

Is Ozone 12 Standard enough, or do I need Advanced?

Standard is enough for most producers. Advanced adds Stem EQ, Unlimiter, Clarity, Impact, Low End Focus and Spectral Shaper, plus separate component plugins. Those matter mostly when you master other people's mixes.

Should I buy now or wait for Black Friday?

SSL Bus Compressor 2 ($19), Weiss MM-1 ($59) and the SSL Fusion Bundle ($49.99) are already at deep discounts until 1 November, so buy those now. FabFilter discounts last Black Friday were about 24 percent, so Pro-L 2 at $169 from Best Service today is already close to a typical sale price.

Do I need a separate limiter if I own Ozone?

No. Ozone's Maximizer with IRC 5 is a full limiter. Many engineers still add Pro-L 2 or Limit Pro for a different sound and its metering.

Where should I buy mastering plugins?

Plugin Boutique sells all six. Best Service also sells Ozone 12, Pro-L 2, SSL Bus Compressor 2 and the Fusion Bundle, and is cheaper today on Ozone and Pro-L 2. Plugin Boutique adds a free gift and Virtual Cash on every order.
