FabFilter Pro-L 2

FabFilter Pro-L 2 is a true peak brickwall limiter, and for many engineers it is the default choice at the very end of the signal chain. Its job is deceptively simple: raise loudness and catch peaks without audibly crushing the music. Where it earns its reputation is in how transparently it does that, and in how clearly it shows you what is happening.

The headline feature is a set of eight limiting algorithms, ranging from the clean and unobtrusive Transparent and Modern styles to more colored, punchy options like Aggressive and Bus. This variety matters. A single limiter that behaves well on a delicate acoustic master and on a wall-of-sound electronic track is rare, and Pro-L 2 covers both extremes without swapping plugins. True peak limiting with up to 32x oversampling keeps inter-sample peaks in check, which is essential for anything destined for lossy streaming codecs.

It excels most at metering. The real-time loudness display, gain-reduction traces, and level history give you an honest, readable picture of your master against EBU R128, ITU-R BS.1770-4, and ATSC A/85 targets. Few limiters make it this easy to hit a loudness spec by eye. Immersive support up to Dolby Atmos 9.1.6 also makes it viable for modern surround and spatial workflows.

The trade-off is price and scope. At $199 it does one thing, and rivals bundle more. Its stablemates Pro-C 2 and Saturn 2 handle compression and saturation respectively, so Pro-L 2 is a specialist you add to a chain rather than a Swiss-army tool like RC-20 Retro Color. It also lacks the auto-loudness and AI-assisted targeting that some newer limiters advertise, and pushed hard on dense low-end material it can pump.
