TDR Kotelnikov is Tokyo Dawn Labs' free wideband dynamics processor, built for transparent control rather than vintage color. It descends from the TDR Feedback Compressor line and keeps the family's useful ideas: a clear control scheme, separate release handling for peak and RMS content, and algorithms that can move dynamics hard without obvious pumping or tonal smearing. The free edition is already enough for serious bus and master work.
It excels on the stereo bus. The crest-factor approach lets peaks settle differently from average level, which is exactly what a dense mix needs when you want glue without squashing transients. Sidechain high-pass, advanced stereo linking, delta preview (hear only what the compressor is doing), and click-free bypass make it practical in real sessions. At 0 dB gain reduction the path is designed to stay bit-transparent, which matters when the plugin lives on the master all day.
The trade-off is character. Kotelnikov will not give you SSL-style punch, tube warmth, or obvious "console" vibe. If that is the sound you want, reach for a colored bus compressor instead. The free version also omits Gentleman's Edition extras such as frequency-dependent ratio and equal-loudness workflow helpers. The control set rewards patience more than a two-knob glue box.
Against its alternatives, FabFilter Pro-C 2 is a more flexible paid compressor with multiple styles. Pro-L 2 and Elevate are limiters/maximizers, not bus glue. Ozone 11 is a full mastering suite. Choose free Kotelnikov when you want honest, transparent dynamic control, and keep a colorful compressor nearby for when the mix needs attitude rather than invisibility.
