IK Multimedia TONEX 2 Player amp and tone modeling software interface

IK Multimedia has released TONEX 2 Player, the free edition of its capture-based amp and tone modeling software, now at version 2.1 after a public beta. It brings a rebuilt interface, Smart Search across your whole library, and ToneNET's 60,000-plus free community captures into one window, at no cost. This is a first look based on the official product pages, not a hands-on review.

At a glance: TONEX 2 Player loads AI-captured tone models of amps, cabs and pedals and plays them in any DAW or standalone, for free. Version 2 rebuilds the Player around a single Home page with a photorealistic gear view, adds Smart Search across models, presets and collections, and folds ToneNET's huge free capture library straight into the browser. It runs as AU, VST3, AAX and standalone on macOS, and VST3, AAX and standalone on Windows. Paid TONEX editions and the TONEX Rig add-on unlock more models and effects.

What is TONEX 2 Player?

TONEX is IK Multimedia's answer to neural amp capture, the technology that profiles a real amplifier or pedal and recreates its response in software. It sits in the same arena as Neural DSP's capture tools and the open TONE3000 and NAM ecosystem. The Player is the free tier: it can't capture its own models, but it can load any TONEX tone model and the enormous library of community captures, which makes it one of the easiest free routes into modern amp modeling.

Version 2 is less a feature bump than a rebuild of how you find and manage sounds. The original Player worked, but a deep capture library quickly turns into a scrolling problem. TONEX 2 Player attacks that directly, and because the Player ships free alongside the paid TONEX Board hardware and the desktop editions, the improvements reach everyone in the ecosystem at once.

What's new in TONEX 2 Player

A rebuilt Home page. The Player is now organized around a single Home page that puts the gear view, the signal chain and the library on one screen. Instead of hopping between pages, you see your rig, your current tone model and the browser together, which is a meaningful change for anyone who swaps sounds while tracking.

Smart Search across everything. TONEX 2 Player adds Smart Search that spans tone models, presets and collections at once. For a system whose whole appeal is a library of tens of thousands of captures, fast, unified search is arguably the most important upgrade here. It's the difference between a library you use and one you abandon.

ToneNET built into the browser. ToneNET, IK's online sharing platform with more than 60,000 free community captures, is now built directly into the Player's browser rather than living on a separate page. You can audition and pull down free tone models without leaving the plugin, which turns that community library into a first-class part of the workflow instead of a website you visit.

A photorealistic gear view and workflow polish. The new gear view renders your rig photorealistically as you build it, and the Player gains resizable browsers, floating windows, multi-monitor support, custom folders, Favorites and a Recently Used list. These are quality-of-life changes, but together they make a large library manageable and bring the free Player closer to a pro tool.

Captured tone, not generic models. The engine underneath is IK's AI Machine Modeling, which profiles the real response of an amp, cab or pedal rather than approximating a named circuit. The Player can't make captures itself, but it plays any TONEX tone model at full quality, so a model loaded in the free Player runs at the same quality as it would in a paid edition.

TONEX 2 Player vs AmpliTube 5 and free rivals

TONEX 2 Player competes on two fronts: against IK's own library-driven AmpliTube 5, and against other free capture tools like TONE3000 and NAM. The split comes down to how you want your tones made.

Which to pick. If you want the deepest built-in effects and a catalog of officially licensed amps and pedals, AmpliTube 5 remains the broader rig builder. If you want captures of specific real-world gear for nothing, TONEX 2 Player is the easiest on-ramp, with a massive free library and a far more capable browser. Tinkerers who want to train their own profiles should look at the open NAM workflow, and players chasing a specific modern high-gain tone will still find dedicated options like the Neural DSP Archetype range worth the money. For the floor, the hardware TONEX Board runs the same capture engine on stage.

Who TONEX 2 Player is for

It suits you if you want pro-level amp tones in your DAW without spending anything, or you already own TONEX gear and want the rebuilt browser. Producers who drop the occasional guitar or bass part and don't want a full amp-sim suite get a lot of value here, since the free ToneNET library alone covers most classic and modern tones.

Skip the free tier if you need to capture your own amps, which requires a paid TONEX edition with the Modeler, or you want a deep onboard effects rack, which lives in the paid TONEX Rig add-on or in a suite like AmpliTube 5. The Player is a loader, not a factory.

How much does TONEX 2 Player cost?

TONEX 2 Player is free, and you download it from IK's official TONEX page or the IK User Area. If you want to capture your own gear or unlock more premium models, the paid editions scale up: TONEX 2 SE at 99.99 dollars, the full TONEX 2 at 199.99, and TONEX 2 MAX for the largest library. The optional TONEX Rig add-on brings a 12-block signal chain and 76 effects drawn from AmpliTube for 149.99 dollars.

FAQ

Is TONEX 2 Player really free?

Yes. The Player edition is a free download and plays any TONEX tone model at full quality, including the 60,000-plus free captures on ToneNET. What it can't do is create new captures, which requires a paid TONEX edition with the Modeler.

What is the difference between TONEX 2 Player and the paid TONEX editions?

The Player loads and plays tone models for free. Paid editions (SE, full and MAX) add their own libraries of premium models and the Modeler for capturing your own gear. The separate TONEX Rig add-on layers on a 12-block signal chain with 76 effects.

What formats and systems does TONEX 2 Player support?

On macOS it runs as AU, VST3, AAX and standalone; on Windows as VST3, AAX and standalone. It needs macOS 11 or newer or Windows 10, an Intel i3 or Apple Silicon processor, 4 GB of RAM and 6 GB of disk, plus an internet connection for authorization and ToneNET.

What is ToneNET?

ToneNET is IK Multimedia's online library where users share TONEX captures. It holds more than 60,000 free tone models, and version 2 builds it directly into the Player's browser so you can audition and download captures without leaving the plugin.
