Twisted Electrons vMEGAfm is the company's first-ever software synth, released in August 2026. It is a plugin port of the MEGAfm, the cult hardware FM synthesizer built around the same Yamaha FM chips found in the Sega Genesis and Mega Drive. This is a deliberate recreation of a gritty classic rather than a clean modern reinvention.
vMEGAfm is a 12-voice, four-operator FM synth with eight algorithms and every operator exposed on sliders. The 12 voices run in three modes: 12-voice polyphonic, 6-voice wide, or unison. Three LFOs route through a full-screen Links matrix, and a built-in arpeggiator and SH-style sequencer generate motion. Crucially, it runs the original MEGAfm firmware and models the Mark I analogue output stage, using both the schematics and a compact GRU neural model, to capture the level-dependent compression and fuzzy saturation that define its sound. It ships with 109 presets, 10 of them MPE, and supports full MPE expression.
The character is specific: gritty, lo-fi, video-game-era FM, not a clean all-rounder. For versatile six-operator FM, FM8 is the deeper tool, while the free Dexed and Arturia DX7 V cover cleaner DX-style FM. There is no AAX build.
