Serum 2

Serum 2 is Xfer Records' overhaul of the wavetable synth that came to define a generation of electronic music. The original Serum earned its reputation on one thing above all: a clean, visual, deeply legible interface that made wavetable synthesis feel obvious rather than arcane. Serum 2 keeps that clarity and pushes far past it. What was essentially a wavetable engine is now a five-engine instrument spanning wavetable, multisample, sample, granular, and spectral synthesis, with dual warps and smooth interpolation cleaning up the artifacts that once forced producers to a rival.

It excels at sound design that you can actually see. Dragging a wavetable, drawing a modulation, reshaping a filter curve, all of it reads at a glance, which is why Serum became the teaching synth for so many producers. The granular and spectral engines open genuinely new territory, from evolving textures to reactive, organic timbres that the first version simply could not produce. Over 626 presets and 288 wavetables mean it is immediately useful, not a blank canvas you have to fill before you get a sound.

The trade-off is cost and weight. At $249 it sits well above Vital, which offers a similar wavetable workflow for free, and its deeper engines can get CPU-hungry on dense, heavily modulated patches. The sheer surface area is also a real learning curve. Against Arturia Pigments it trades some of Pigments' hybrid analog character for a more focused, tactile wavetable-first workflow, and it comprehensively outclasses the older, simpler Sylenth1 on scope and modulation.

Choose Serum 2 if you want an industry-standard synth that rewards deep sound design and doubles as the clearest way to learn synthesis.
