Soundtoys SuperPlate is a dedicated plate reverb that packs five classic electromechanical plate models into one modern plugin. Instead of a single generic "plate" algorithm, you choose among recreations of the EMT 140, EMT 240 goldfoil, Audicon/Lawson plate, Stocktronics RX4000, and EcoPlate III — a collective history of studio plate design without the weight, cost, or maintenance of the hardware.
It excels at vocal and instrument plates with character. Each style has a distinct attack and tone; the Stocktronics zing, the 140's studio-standard bloom, and the goldfoil's darker, tighter response cover different mix roles. Tube and solid-state preamp models (plus a clean path) add harmonic color before the reverb. Modern controls — infinite decay, pre-delay, modulation, a full EQ, and auto-decay ducking that shortens the tail when the input is loud — solve classic plate problems of mud and wash in dense arrangements. Little Plate is included for the ultra-simple four-control workflow.
The trade-offs are focus and price. At $149, SuperPlate costs more than Valhalla's entire single-plugin lineup, and it only does plates. If you need halls, chambers, rooms, and creative non-linear spaces in one plugin, FabFilter Pro-R 2 or a Valhalla bundle is broader value. Activation needs an internet connection at license time, which some locked-down studios dislike.
Against its alternatives, Pro-R 2 is the flexible premium all-rounder. VintageVerb is the cheap everyday algorithmic staple. Blackhole is the extreme creative space effect. Valhalla Room covers natural rooms rather than plates. Choose SuperPlate when plate authenticity and modern plate control are the job — especially on vocals and snares where that steel-tank bloom is the sound you are chasing.
