The Dubspot verdict

A faithful, great-sounding emulation of the Prophet-5 Rev 2 that pairs authentic analog character with modern extras like MPE and built-in effects.

Best for: Producers who want that classic five-voice analog polysynth sound in a polished, affordable, immediately playable plugin.

Pros

  • Accurate SSM VCO and 2040 filter modeling with true vintage drift
  • Poly-Mod delivers the signature Prophet FM and cross-mod textures
  • MPE and MTS-ESP support plus 16 modern built-in effects
  • Cheap for the quality, and bundled inside V Collection

Cons

  • Single-model synth; less versatile than a full V Collection or Pigments
  • U-he Repro-5 still edges it on raw analog fidelity for purists
  • Faithful panel-only layout limits deeper sound-design workflows

Arturia Prophet-5 V is a software recreation of the Sequential Prophet-5 Rev 2, one of the most storied five-voice analog polysynths ever built. Arturia models the pair of SSM-style VCOs, the classic 2040 low-pass filter, and the instrument's small imperfections. The result is a synth that breathes and drifts the way the hardware did, rather than sitting perfectly in tune like a sterile digital clone.

It excels at the sounds the original made famous: lush brass pads, glassy keys, fat basses, and the swirling, slightly unstable analog polyphony that defined a generation of records. The Poly-Mod section is the heart of the instrument, routing filter envelope and oscillator B into pitch and pulse width for gritty FM tones, growling sync leads, and evolving cross-modulation. Arturia layers modern conveniences on top, including a five-pattern arpeggiator, MPE and MTS-ESP microtuning, and sixteen built-in effects across three slots. That last addition matters, letting you build a finished patch with reverb, delay, and chorus without leaving the plugin.

The trade-off is focus. This is a single-model synth, so it does not offer the sonic range of a full V Collection or the deep modulation of Arturia's own Pigments. Purists still tend to rank U-he's Repro-5 slightly higher for raw analog fidelity, and the faithful panel-only layout means fewer hidden modulation options than a modern soft synth. Against its listed alternatives, Prophet-5 V sits above the general-purpose ANA 2, sounds warmer and more characterful than Mini V's Minimoog-style mono voice, and offers a distinctly different flavor from the polysynths inside Legend HZ.

At $149, or bundled inside V Collection, the value is strong. If you want that unmistakable Prophet polysynth in a stable, playable, effects-ready package, this is an easy recommendation.
