UJAM Virtual Drummer is a family of phrase-based drum instruments built around a simple idea: pick a "drummer" with a personality, choose a style, and get a mix-ready groove without touching a piano roll. The current lineup spans seven titles — LEGEND, HOT, BRUTE, DEEP, PHAT 2, SOLID 2, and HEAVY 2 — each tuned to a genre lane, from vintage rock and pop to hip-hop and heavier fare. Under the hood sits a large library of recorded phrases: nearly 7,000 grooves and fills across 301 styles, played back through 35 kits and shaped by an onboard mixer with genre-appropriate presets.

It excels at speed and believability. Load a title, audition a style, and you have a drum track that swings and breathes far more naturally than most step-programmed patterns. The interface is deliberately shallow — song sections, intensity controls, and one-click fills — which makes it ideal for songwriters, producers, and anyone who can't read drum notation. When you need to go deeper, MIDI drag-and-drop export drops the phrase into your DAW for full editing, so Virtual Drummer works equally well as a sketchpad or a finished part.

The trade-off is control. You're working within curated phrases, not building beats from scratch, so highly specific or unconventional grooves fall outside its comfort zone. The kits sound polished but processed, and purists chasing raw multi-mic realism will notice the ceiling.

Against its alternatives, the distinction is philosophy. Trigger 2 is a drum-replacement and sampler tool for engineers layering or swapping recorded drums — a different job entirely. Deeper acoustic samplers like Superior Drummer or BFD offer far more articulation and mixing depth, at a steeper price and a real learning curve. Virtual Drummer aims lower and hits its target cleanly.

At $119 per title, it's fair value for the songwriting boost, though collecting the whole range adds up. Choose it when your priority is getting a convincing groove down fast — not sculpting every hit yourself.
