Roland ZENOLOGY Pro is the plugin version of ZEN-Core, the sound engine inside Roland's current FANTOM, JUPITER-X and JUNO-X synths. Each tone layers up to four partials, and each partial has its own oscillator (vintage Roland waveforms, PCM waves with sync and cross-modulation), one of ten filter types, an amp and two LFOs. It ships with 4,106 tones and 109 drum kits, 93 multi-effects including the JUNO-106 and CE-1 choruses and the SDD-320 Dimension D, and eight reverbs. A lifetime licence is $229 at Plugin Boutique.
The reason to buy it over another synth is the Roland ecosystem. Patches move between the plugin and ZEN-Core hardware, so a FANTOM or JUPITER-X owner can build sounds in the DAW and play them on stage. Model Expansions turn ZENOLOGY into recreations of the JUPITER-8, JUNO-106, SH-101, JX-8P and JD-800, with their own panels and, on some models, more polyphony than the originals. It is also light: Roland asks for 2 GB of RAM and 1 GB of disk space. Our ZENOLOGY GX for iPad first look covers the mobile version of the same engine.
The weak spots are pricing and character. The $229 licence does not include any Model Expansions; the ZENOLOGY Pro Collection with five of them is $599. Roland's own Cloud Pro membership includes ZENOLOGY Pro and every Model Expansion for $99 a year, which makes the lifetime licence a long-term bet. And ZEN-Core is a workstation engine: superb for pads, keys, basses and drums, but not a wavetable or granular sound-design tool.
ZENOLOGY Pro: lifetime vs collection vs subscription
| Option | What you get | Price |
|---|---|---|
| ZENOLOGY Lite | 240 tones, 10 drum kits, cannot save | Free with a Roland Account |
| Roland Cloud Core | Standard ZENOLOGY, ZEN-Core sound packs, ZENOLOGY FX | $29.99 a year |
| ZENOLOGY Pro lifetime | Full plugin, no Model Expansions | $229 at Plugin Boutique |
| ZENOLOGY Pro Collection | Plugin plus JUNO-106, JUPITER-8, SH-101, JD-800 and JX-8P expansions | $599 at Plugin Boutique |
| Roland Cloud Pro | ZENOLOGY Pro, all Model Expansions, two Legendary instruments | $99 a year or $9.99 a month |
| KORG Collection 6 (rival) | Korg's vintage and workstation synths incl. M1, TRITON, TRINITY | $399 at Plugin Boutique |
Buy now or wait? Plugin Boutique had ZENOLOGY Pro at $99 until 31 October, and it is back to $229. With Black Friday close, there is little reason to pay full price this week. If you want the Model Expansions, run the numbers on Roland Cloud Pro first: two years of membership cost less than the $599 Collection.
How it compares
KORG Collection 6 is the closest rival: another hardware maker's own workstation and vintage synths, with the M1, TRITON and the 1995 TRINITY, for $399. It recreates specific instruments, while ZENOLOGY is one modern engine you can program from scratch. For the JUPITER-8 sound alone, Arturia's Jup-8 V is a dedicated emulation, against Roland's JUPITER-8 Model Expansion or its separate $199 JUPITER-8 plugin. Our best synth VST plugins guide covers the wider field.
Who it is for: owners of ZEN-Core hardware, and producers who want classic Roland pads, keys, basses and drum kits in a plugin that barely touches the CPU. Who should skip it: sound designers after wavetable or granular synthesis, and anyone who mainly wants the Model Expansions, who should look at Roland Cloud Pro instead.
