What's new in Cubase 16

Steinberg's own overview video runs through the headline features. The full list is on Steinberg's Cubase 16 page.

Instrument Stacks

Instrument Stacks combine several VST instruments, sampler tracks and drum tracks into one stack, which you play from a single track. Each layer gets its own filtering, and the whole stack has unified controls. Layered sounds used to need extra MIDI tracks or custom routing. Now they live in one place, in Pro and Artist.

Key Editor: Strum, Stretch and lyrics

Three Key Editor changes reach every edition. Strum adds natural timing to programmed chords, from a subtle spread to a full strummed performance. Stretch fits melodies, basslines and chord progressions to a new length. It can also add an accelerando or a ritardando with one gesture. You can now type lyrics next to the notes, with controls for pronunciation and language. A new Rename Controller option replaces generic MIDI controller names with labels that match your instruments and hardware.

Stem separation and Spectral AudioWarp

Stem separation delivers higher-quality results and now has dedicated piano and guitar stems. The new Spectral AudioWarp modes can reshape vocals, instruments, drums and full mixes in ways the earlier algorithms couldn't. Both are Cubase Pro features.

New instruments, effects and sounds

DrumChain, in Pro and Artist, is a multi-effects processor built to add punch, clarity and low-end weight to drums. VocalTouch keeps vocal processing to a few controls, and Omnivocal Basic is a lightweight tool for sketching vocal ideas. Both are in every edition. The Module FM library adds more than 200 HALion Sonic presets for leads, keys, basses and textures in Pro and Artist. Every edition also gets five new sample packs and a set of mastering presets with technical and genre-based starting points.

Cubase 16 also connects to Waves Illugen, a sample generator. Every Cubase 16 user gets a two-month Illugen subscription voucher in their Steinberg account.

Mixing, sync and MIDI

The maximum number of sends per track doubles from eight to sixteen, and cue sends go from four to eight. Ableton Link makes it easier to sync Cubase with other compatible music apps. MIDI 2.0 support now covers Note Expression and Expression Maps. On Windows 11, Cubase runs on the latest Windows MIDI platform. Extended ASIO-Guard gives demanding projects more processing headroom. A redesigned tempo detection workflow matches imported songs and recordings faster.

Workflow changes

The Settings window has been rebuilt. Preferences, key commands, project setup and audio connections now sit in one searchable window that stays open while you work. Quick Help shows context-aware guidance in the Left Zone or in a floating window, and Guided Tours help new users find their way. The Audio Pool is redesigned, and M4A and AAC files can now be imported. Sampler Track and Drum Machine gain pitch detection and phase inversion. Cubase Pro can also send video to more than one display.

Elements covers recording, songwriting and mixing, with track limits, 7 instruments and sound libraries and 45 effects. Artist removes the track limits and adds VariAudio pitch correction, Instrument Stacks, DrumChain and the FM library. Pro adds the new stem separation and Spectral AudioWarp, plus Control Room, Modulators and 98 effects. For most producers starting fresh, Artist is the value pick. It has the new layering tools and unlimited tracks for half the list price of Pro.

Thomann's UK store lists Artist 16 and Elements 16 but has no Cubase Pro 16 listing yet. It still sells Cubase 15: Cubase Pro 15 at £484, Cubase Artist 15 at £254 and Cubase Elements 15 at £58. Under Steinberg's grace period, a Cubase 15 license activated now updates to Cubase 16 for free. That makes Elements 15 at £58 cheaper than Elements 16 at £84.

Every Cubase 16 update and upgrade price

Steinberg calls a move to a newer version of the same edition an update. A move to a higher edition is an upgrade. Best Service lists every path, including the updates from Cubase 15. Plugin Boutique sells the upgrades but not the same-edition updates.

Cubase AI and Cubase LE are the compact versions that come with some audio interfaces and other hardware. If you use another DAW, the Cubase Pro 16 Competitive Crossgrade costs €349 or $327.85 at Best Service. It needs proof that you own a qualifying DAW, such as a purchase receipt, a screenshot of your product registration or a photo of the package with its serial number.

Bought Cubase 15 recently? You may not need to pay

Steinberg's FAQ says that all Cubase license activations from October 7, 2026, onward result in a free license update to Cubase 16. If you bought and activated Cubase 15 in the last four weeks, check your Steinberg account or the Steinberg Activation Manager before you pay for an update.

How to pay about 16% less at Best Service

Best Service's terms say its euro prices include the taxes for a sale in Germany, and that means 19% VAT. Buyers who live outside the EU don't owe it. Best Service takes it off at checkout:

  1. Switch the shop currency to EUR in the menu at the top of the page.
  2. Check out with your own billing address outside the EU. Any non-EU country works, not just the US.
  3. The VAT comes off the euro price before you pay.
ProductPrice shownPrice without VAT
Cubase Pro 16€559€469.75
Cubase Artist 16€299€251.26
Cubase Elements 16€89€74.79
Cubase Pro 16 update from Pro 15€99€83.19
Cubase Artist 16 update from Artist 15€79€66.39

That works out at 16% off every euro price on the page. Three things are worth knowing before you pay. Best Service's dollar prices already leave VAT out, at about $1.12 per VAT-free euro, so paying in euros only beats paying in dollars when your card converts at less than that. Your own country's sales or import taxes can still apply. And the saving is only for buyers who live outside the EU, because EU customers pay VAT whichever currency they choose.

Is Cubase 16 worth it?

Early reactions online are mixed. Many long-time users see Cubase 16 as an incremental release rather than a big leap. The most common complaint is the cost of a paid update every year. The praise goes to practical changes: Instrument Stacks, the Strum and Stretch tools, Ableton Link and the option to rename MIDI controllers come up again and again.

  • Cubase Pro 15 owners pay €99 or $93 to update. That's worth it if you'll use Instrument Stacks, Ableton Link or the piano and guitar stems. If you won't, waiting costs you nothing.
  • If you activated Cubase 15 on or after October 7, 2026, the update is free.
  • Owners of Cubase Pro 12, 13 or 14 pay €199 or $186.94. That brings at least two versions' worth of changes at once.
  • New buyers should look at Artist first: unlimited tracks, VariAudio and the new layering tools for €299 or $280.88 at Best Service.
  • Steinberg's free 30-day trial lets you test all of it before you spend anything.
