XLN Audio released RC-20 Retro Color v2 on 3 November 2026, the first major version of a plugin that has been around, in XLN's words, "for over a decade". The headline is a creative Echo module that runs RC-20's own effects inside the feedback loop, so every repeat picks up more colour. Tape-style Varispeed, moveable modules and more than 250 new presets come with it. It is $99 at Plugin Boutique until 12 January 2027 (from $129), and owners of the original can upgrade for $19.
At a glance: six creative modules (Noise, Wobble, Distort, Digital, Space, Loss) plus a new Echo section and a finishing stage; Varispeed at 1/2, 1/4 or 1/8 speed, locked to tempo; moveable modules, full undo history, module locking and snapshot comparisons; Loudness match; 250+ new presets, with every v1 factory and artist preset included. VST3, AU and AAX (64-bit) on macOS 10.13 or later and Windows 10 or 11, installed alongside v1. $99 at Plugin Boutique, $19 upgrade, 10-day trial. A deeper colour box for anyone who likes the RC-20 sound, not a corrective tool.
What is RC-20 Retro Color?
RC-20 is a vintage character and lo-fi multi-effect. It recreates the sound and the imperfections of old recording gear, with each module adding one kind of age, and the Magnitude slider scales the processing across the whole plugin with one control. Push it up for a dusty verse, pull it down for a cleaner chorus, or automate it for a transition.
The original was built around the same idea of six character modules, scaled by Magnitude (our RC-20 Retro Color plugin card covers the plugin in depth). It had no Echo and no Varispeed, so RC-20 users usually added a delay after it. v2 keeps the six-module core, with the fourth module now called Digital and the sixth called Loss, and builds the missing pieces in.
v2 installs as a new, separate plugin next to the original, so old sessions keep loading v1 exactly as they were.
What's new in RC-20 Retro Color v2
Echo, with RC-20's effects in the feedback loop
The Echo module is the main reason v2 exists. RC-20's effects sit inside the feedback loop, so each repeat passes through them again and gains more colour. You can bring Wobble, Distort, Digital, Space and Loss into the Echo loop. A vocal throw can start clean and fall apart into warped, bit-reduced tape repeats by the fourth echo, without a chain of separate plugins.
Feedback can be pushed into self-oscillation for cascading swells, which is useful for builds and the end of a section. Pitched or reversed Grains add shimmer and atmosphere on top of the repeats. Echo times follow tempo sync, so the repeats stay on the grid.
Varispeed
Varispeed gives you tape-style, pitched-down playback at 1/2, 1/4 or 1/8 speed, and the slowdown stays locked in time with the track. That is the classic "tape slowing down" sound for drops, breakdowns and stops, without leaving the plugin or bouncing audio.
Moveable modules
You can now reorder RC-20's modules to find new interactions and timbres, so the same six effects can produce different results depending on what feeds what. Pre/post Noise routing gives you a similar choice for the noise layer: blend it in before the effects or after them.
A wider palette of damage
Each module gets new options. Warp is a new modulation type, and modulation, Magnetic tape flutter and Echo times all sync to tempo. Digital Sputter is a choked, gated "dying battery" sound, a quick way to make a synth line stutter like failing hardware. Drive and Overload add new saturation options. New Noise types sit alongside vinyl crackle and tape hiss, including dial-up chatter and crowds. New distortion types cover tape, preamp and 4-track cassette.
Space covers reverbs, rooms and textures, with Stretch, Pan/Width and Space Ducking, which pulls the reverb down while the source plays so a lo-fi room does not swamp a vocal.
Finishing section, Loudness match and Focus/Cut
After the creative modules comes a finishing section: EQ, Cut filters, Tone, Compress, Clip, Input/Output and Varispeed. Tone has four modes: Tilt, Mid, Lo-Fi speaker and Vintage mic color. Stereo width runs from mono to 200%. A Master Compressor and soft Clip glue the result.
Two additions matter most for mixing. Loudness match automatically matches the processed output to the dry level, so you judge the colour rather than the volume jump. Focus and Cut filters on each module set the range a module works on: Focus leaves everything outside the range untouched, while Cut removes it. That lets you age the top end of a drum loop without thinning the kick, or keep noise out of the low end.
Workflow, presets and v1 compatibility
v2 adds a full undo history, module locking, modifier-key control of several parameters at once, snapshot comparisons, oversampling and master compression. Module locking is the quiet win: lock a Wobble setting you like and audition presets around it.
There are 250+ new presets, with a browser that filters by character, function and modules, a dice button for a random preset, and collections and preset sharing. All v1 factory and artist presets are included, and your own v1 presets can be imported and converted.

| Best for | Deep, layered vintage colour and degrading echoes | Existing sessions, which stay on v1 | Lofi basics for very little money |
Which to pick: if you own RC-20 and use it often, the $19 upgrade is the obvious move; the Echo module alone replaces a plugin slot on most of your lo-fi chains. New buyers who want the most flexible vintage colour tool should take v2 at $99 while the intro runs. If your budget is tight and you only need lofi basics with a reverb and echo, Thenatan VYBZ 2 does that for $10 until 19 November, a tenth of the price. And if what you actually want is clean, controllable saturation rather than wear and noise, our best saturation plugins guide is a better place to start.
Upgrade or not? A note for v1 owners
Yes, if you use RC-20 regularly. For $19 you get the Echo module, Varispeed, moveable modules, the expanded palette, Loudness match, Focus/Cut filters, full undo and 250+ new presets, and your presets come with you.
Because v2 is a separate plugin, upgrading does not touch existing projects. That is safe, but it means two RC-20s in your plugin list, and old sessions stay on v1 unless you rebuild the chain yourself. If you only reach for RC-20 now and then for a bit of hiss, v1 still does that job.
Who RC-20 v2 is for
Buy it if lo-fi, beat-driven or textural music is your main lane and you want colour and now echo in one window. It suits producers who automate texture across an arrangement and sound designers who want self-oscillating echoes that degrade as they repeat.
Skip it if you want a corrective tool; this is a colouring plugin and will not fix a recording. Skip it in Pro Tools First, which is not supported, or if $129 after the intro is too much for a texture effect. If lofi basics are all you need, VYBZ 2 is far cheaper right now.
How much does RC-20 Retro Color v2 cost?

FAQ
Is the RC-20 v2 upgrade worth it for v1 owners?
For regular users, yes. $19 until 12 January 2027 adds the Echo module, Varispeed, moveable modules, new distortion and noise types and 250+ presets, and your v1 presets carry over.
Will RC-20 v2 replace RC-20 in my old projects?
No. v2 installs as a new, separate plugin alongside the original, so existing projects keep using v1 untouched. You will see both in your plugin list.
RC-20 v2 vs Thenatan VYBZ 2: which should I buy?
RC-20 v2 is the deeper tool, with moveable modules, an Echo that runs its effects in the feedback loop and Varispeed, for $99 at Plugin Boutique. VYBZ 2 is a lofi multi-effect with reverb, stereo echo and width tools for $10 until 19 November 2026. Pick VYBZ 2 for cheap lofi basics, RC-20 v2 for depth and control.
What are the system requirements for RC-20 v2?
macOS 10.13 or later (64-bit) or Windows 10 or 11 (64-bit), with an internet connection during installation. It runs as VST3, AU and AAX (64-bit). XLN tests it on Ableton Live 10+, Logic Pro 10+, Pro Tools 11+, Cakewalk by BandLab, FL Studio 20+, Reason 9.5+, Reaper 5+ and Cubase 10+. Pro Tools First is not supported.
Verdict
RC-20 Retro Color v2 builds in the one thing the original made you do elsewhere. The Echo module, with RC-20's effects inside the feedback loop, turns a colour box into something that builds degrading, self-oscillating repeats on its own, and Varispeed covers tape-stop moves without bouncing audio. Moveable modules, Focus/Cut filters and Loudness match make it more precise in a mix, and keeping every v1 preset makes the move painless. The limits: it is still a colouring tool, the price returns to $129 after 12 January, owners pay $19, and you will have two RC-20s in your plugin list. For regular RC-20 users the upgrade is easy to justify, and for new buyers the $99 intro is the time to get it.
