What Tresse is
Tresse started as a hardware instrument built in Lisbon. The plugin is that idea in a DAW: a rack of synthesis engines, two layers you can sequence separately, and a filter that morphs instead of jumping between types. Våld Labs is still developing a standalone hardware box with physical controls. The public target is Q1 2027. The desktop licence is what you can buy today.
The engine count is the headline. Official copy: 24 classic Plaits engines and 15 developed by Våld Labs. That is the Mutable Instruments Plaits vocabulary (subtractive, FM, resonators, speech, drums, grains) plus a second pile that does not pretend to be a Eurorack clone. The shop also says the desktop instruments run compiled 48 kHz physical-modeling DSP.
It sits near other "many engines, one instrument" synths we already cover. Phase Plant is a semi-modular construction kit. Pigments 6 is a flagship with a deep modulation page. Current 2 is a wavetable and sampling hybrid. Tresse is smaller and cheaper: two layers, a sequencer, a morphing filter, and a fixed catalogue of 39 engines you pick rather than patch from scratch.
iPhone and iPad builds are listed as coming soon. The official walkthrough already shows the 1.2 line across iOS, VST3, AUv3, and standalone. The shop's buy path is the desktop licence: VST3 and AU for macOS, VST3 for Windows.
39 engines, two layers
Each layer picks an engine and plays up to eight voices. Two layers means 16 voices when both are full. Official marketing calls it 8+8 voice polyphony. Give each layer its own engine and its own evolving pattern, then sit them under one filter and effects path.
The official browser groups engines as Subtractive, FM / Phase Dist, Additive / Wavetable, and further piles for chords, granular, resonators, and drums. Named engines on the product include:

That list is the catalogue, not a feature you unlock later. Some engines are marked free in the in-page browser. The paid desktop licence is the full set.
Plaits code is the Émilie Gillet MIT lineage. Våld Labs says so on the product. You are not buying a Mutable Instruments licence. You are buying Tresse's host, the extra 15 engines, the dual-layer sequencer, and the filter.
Generative sequencer and the SEM-style filter
The sequencer is the second half of the instrument. Official copy: two independent layers and generative sequencing. Layer two sounds, give each its own evolving pattern. This is not a piano-roll that waits for you to draw every step. It is a step sequencer that generates motion, then you steer it.
The filter is a morphing SEM-style design. You move continuously between low-pass, band-pass, high-pass, and notch. Soften a bright engine toward notch, or open a drum engine into high-pass, without a mode switch that jumps. Amp and filter envelopes are on the synth page (attack, decay, sustain, release for both the amp and the filter). An LFO and an effects row (including a post-filter fold) sit on the same page. The official GUI clip is labelled "engine selection, oscillator, filter, envelopes, LFO and effects."
Detune and stereo spread are first-class controls on the voice, which matters on SuprSaw, DualDet, and Swarm. Portamento is there if a layer is a lead.
Patch share, licence, and the hardware path
Patches leave the plugin as a text key or a QR code, with Close, Share, and Copy on the official share dialog. That is the collaboration trick: send a key in a chat, or hold a phone up to the QR. No proprietary bank file required for a one-patch handoff.
The desktop licence is one payment for your own computers. Checkout is Lemon Squeezy. The shop prints €19.99. That intro holds through 30 September 2026. The price after the intro is €29.99.
Formats on the buy block: VST3 and AU for macOS, VST3 for Windows. There is no AAX in that list. iPhone and iPad are "coming soon" on the same page, as a separate mobile line, not as a reason to wait on the desktop licence.
Hardware remains a parallel project: compact box, physical controls, target Q1 2027. The Lisbon prototype is the origin story, not a product you can order today.

Pick Tresse when you want a cheap dual-layer instrument with a Plaits-sized engine list and a sequencer that generates patterns. Pick Phase Plant when you want to build the synth yourself and grow into Snapins. Pick Pigments 6 when you want a deep flagship and you already live in that GUI. Pick Current 2 when sampling and wavetables in one hybrid is the point.
Tresse will not replace those three if you need AAX, a modular patchbay, or a 200-dollar modulation matrix. It is the €20 intro for the engine-plus-sequencer job.
Who Tresse is for
Tresse suits producers who like Plaits-style engines and want two of them sequenced without a Eurorack case. The €19.99 intro through 30 September 2026 is the reason to buy this month if that description is you. Patch-as-text is the reason it is easy to swap sounds with someone else.
Skip it if you need AAX. Skip it if you wanted the hardware first. That box is targeted for Q1 2027. Skip it if you need to import your own wavetables and samples as the core workflow. That is Current or Phase Plant.
