UVI Player: Free Plugin Now Plays Every Falcon Expansion
UVI Workstation is now UVI Player, a free host that loads every Falcon Expansion without a Falcon licence. Specs, system needs, Kontakt Player comparison.

UVI has renamed its free instrument host. UVI Workstation is now UVI Player, and the rename comes with a real change: every Falcon Expansion now loads and plays in it, so you no longer need a $299 Falcon licence to use those sound packs. The player itself stays free on macOS and Windows, standalone or inside your DAW.
At a glance: UVI Player is free through the UVI Portal installer. It runs standalone and as AU, AAX, VST and VST3 on macOS 10.14 through macOS 27 and on 64-bit Windows 10 and 11. It plays UVI soundware, UVI-Powered partner libraries and all Falcon Expansions, and it ships with the 50-preset UVI Starter pack. Existing UVI Workstation users keep their libraries and licences with nothing to do.
What is UVI Player?
UVI Player is the free engine that runs UVI's instrument catalogue: Vintage Vault synths, Key Suite pianos, Augmented Orchestra, World Suite and the rest. It does the job Kontakt Player does for Native Instruments libraries. You load an instrument, it opens with its own custom interface, and you play it.
Under the old name, UVI Workstation, it already did most of that. The core engine is unchanged. What moved is the line between the free player and Falcon, UVI's paid hybrid synth and sampler. Falcon Expansions were sound packs built on the Falcon engine, and until this update you needed Falcon to open them. Now the free player loads them with their full interfaces, macro controls and presets intact.
That matters for anyone who has looked at a Falcon Expansion and stopped at the price of the host. It also makes UVI Player a fair way to hear what Falcon 2027 sounds like before you decide whether you need the editor behind it.
What changed in UVI Player
Falcon Expansions load and play as designed. Every Expansion opens with the same front panel and macros it shows in Falcon. You perform and tweak the presets. You do not get Falcon's patch editor, so you cannot open the layers, oscillators, modulators and scripts underneath. When you want that depth, the same Expansion opens in Falcon.
A redesigned browser. Library, FX and Multi views now share one styling. The preset browser works with tags, text search, favourites and instant audio previews, so you can audition a sound before you load it.
Single and Multi modes. A new Single/Multi toggle switches between one instrument and a layered multi, and Save as Default Multi stores your starting setup.
A better mixer. The mixer gains mute, solo and VU meters per part, which helps when you stack several instruments in one instance.
Built-in tools stay. You can still layer instruments, add effects and run chords through the arpeggiator, standalone or in a DAW.
A free starter pack. Every download includes UVI Starter, 50 presets across a range of styles. It means a new user has something to play before buying a single library.
The UVI Builder Platform
The same announcement opened Falcon's engine to other sound companies. Through the UVI Builder Platform, partner brands build instruments on the Falcon technology, and those instruments play in both Falcon and the free UVI Player. UVI handles compatibility, copy protection and delivery through UVI Portal. Partners pay no upfront cost and no encoding fees, with quarterly payments.
Acousticsamples and VI Labs already sell UVI-Powered instruments that run in the player. More partners should mean more libraries that open in one free host instead of another standalone app.

UVI Player vs Kontakt 8 Player vs Falcon 2027

|---|---|---|---|
| Price | Free | Free | $149 intro at Plugin Boutique to 31 Oct, $299 regular |
| Libraries it plays | UVI, UVI-Powered partners, Falcon Expansions | NI and licensed Kontakt Player libraries | Everything UVI Player plays, plus full editing |
| Non-licensed libraries | Not applicable | Full Kontakt libraries run 15 minutes in demo mode | Not applicable |

| Free content | UVI Starter, 50 presets | Piano Uno, plus Komplete Start | Factory presets and a $100 soundware voucher on a new licence |
The comparison is about catalogues, not quality. The free Kontakt 8 Player is the bigger ecosystem, with over a thousand third-party libraries. UVI Player is the door to a different catalogue, and with Falcon Expansions included it is now a much wider one.
Falcon is the step up, not a rival. If the presets in an Expansion are close but you want to change the oscillators or rebuild the modulation, that is Falcon's job. UVI Falcon 2027 is $149 at Plugin Boutique until 31 October, down from $299.
Who UVI Player is for
It is for anyone who owns UVI libraries, obviously, but the rename widens the audience. Producers who want Falcon's sound without learning a deep modular sampler can now buy a single Expansion and play it in the free player. Composers who already rely on UVI Synth Anthology 5 or other UVI soundware gain the better browser and mixer for free.
Skip it if you never touch UVI libraries and are happy inside Kontakt. Skip it too if you want to design patches from scratch: the player plays and tweaks, and the editing stays in Falcon.
Price and availability
UVI Player is free from UVI through the UVI Portal downloader, with UVI Starter included. Falcon Expansions cost $39 each on UVI's store. UVI's launch announcement ran the Expansions as buy one, get one free through 26 October. Falcon 2027 itself is $149 at Plugin Boutique until 31 October.
FAQ
Is UVI Player the same as UVI Workstation?
Yes. It is the same core software under a new name, now able to play Falcon Expansions. Existing libraries and licences carry over with no action needed.
Do I need Falcon to use Falcon Expansions?
No. Every Falcon Expansion now loads and plays in the free UVI Player. Falcon adds full patch editing.
Is UVI Player free?
Yes, on macOS and Windows, as a standalone app and as AU, AAX, VST and VST3 plugins.
What are the system requirements?
macOS 10.14 to macOS 27 or 64-bit Windows 10 and 11, 4 GB of RAM and about 513 MB of disk space on Mac or 339 MB on Windows, with an SSD or 7,200 rpm drive recommended.
UVI Player vs Kontakt Player?
Both are free hosts for their own ecosystems. Kontakt Player plays NI and licensed third-party libraries. UVI Player plays UVI soundware, UVI-Powered partner libraries and Falcon Expansions.
Verdict
The rename is cosmetic. The Falcon Expansion support is not. UVI has turned its free player into a real entry point to Falcon's sound, and paired it with a cleaner browser, a better mixer and a 50-preset starter pack. Anyone curious about Falcon can now spend $39 on one Expansion instead of $149 or more on the host. This is a first look based on UVI's official materials, not a hands-on review.
