Serato DJ 5.0: Lucid Beatgrids and iOS Transfer
Serato DJ 5.0 rebuilds beatgrid analysis with automatic tempo tracking, adds Open Streaming and Cue Loops, and sends your crates to the new iOS app.

Serato shipped Serato DJ 5.0 on October 20, 2026, the biggest version jump the software has had in years. The headline is Lucid Beatgrids, a rebuilt analysis engine that tracks tempo changes automatically. The release also adds Open Streaming across multiple services, one-button Cue Loops, and Serato iOS Transfer, which pushes your library to the brand new Serato DJ app for iPhone and iPad. Here's what changed, and whether it's worth the update.
At a glance: Serato DJ 5.0 is a free update for existing users. Serato DJ Lite stays free, Serato DJ Pro is 11.99 USD per month or 299 USD outright, and the new Serato DJ Suite is 14.99 USD per month or 499 USD. It runs on macOS and Windows, with the separate Serato DJ for iOS app free on the App Store. The standout feature, Lucid Beatgrids, finally fixes the thing DJs complained about most.
What is Serato DJ?
Serato is one of the two names that dominate laptop DJing, alongside AlphaTheta's rekordbox. It drives more than 150 mixers, turntables, and controllers, and it's long been the default for scratch and open-format DJs. Version 5.0 is the first release since Serato's acquisition by Tiny's TLTD, and it reads like a statement of intent.
The core job hasn't changed. You analyze your tracks, Serato maps the beatgrid and the key, and you mix from a laptop or a supported controller. What 5.0 reworks is how well that analysis holds up on real music, plus where your library can travel.
What's new in Serato DJ 5.0
Lucid Beatgrids
This is the big one. Serato describes Lucid Beatgrids as a completely rebuilt analysis engine with significantly improved downbeat detection and, for the first time in Serato DJ, automatic tempo tracking. In plain terms, it reads tracks that speed up, slow down, or drift, and lays a grid that follows the music instead of fighting it.
Flexible Beatgrid Analysis is now the default. The older Fixed Beatgrid Analysis is still there for tracks that are rock solid at one tempo. BPM labels appear on the waveform wherever the tempo changes, and you can set those changes to snap to a bar or to a single beat. Two new edit controls, Set Grid Start and Set Beat, let you nudge a grid by hand when the engine needs a steer. There's one thing to plan for: existing tracks need re-analyzing to pick up the new grids, and Serato doesn't overwrite your old beatgrids when you do.
Open Streaming
You can now log into several streaming services at once. Each service shows up as its own crate, and the search bar gains a dropdown so you can aim a search at a single provider. Serato also added key and BPM display for streamed tracks on Beatport, Tidal, SoundCloud, and Spotify, though not yet on Apple Music. Default Tidal DJ playlists round it out.
Cue Loops
Cue Loops trigger a Hot Cue and a Loop from the same marker with one button press. It's a small change that tightens live edits, and it's available in Serato DJ Pro and Serato DJ for iOS, not in Lite.
Serato iOS Transfer
Serato DJ for iOS is a separate app, free to download, that brings the software to iPhone and iPad. The 5.0 desktop release adds Serato iOS Transfer, which sends crates and songs to that app and carries your cue points, beatgrids, and key metadata with them. Prepare a set on the laptop, then walk to the booth with it on a phone. If you want harmonic help while you build those sets, our guide to harmonic mixing and the standalone tool Mixed In Key still earn their place.
Smaller touches include Protect Library Returns and M3U and M3U8 playlist import.

Serato DJ Pro vs rekordbox
The real question for most DJs is Serato versus AlphaTheta's rekordbox, the other giant. Both have a free tier and a paid tier, and both now chase the same streaming and mobile ground.
| Serato DJ Pro | rekordbox | |
|---|---|---|
| Free tier | Serato DJ Lite | rekordbox Free plan |
| Paid pricing | 11.99 USD/mo or 299 USD outright | Subscription tiers (Core, Creative, Pro) |
| Beatgrids | Lucid Beatgrids, automatic tempo tracking | Fixed and dynamic analysis |
| Streaming | Open Streaming, multiple services at once | Streaming via supported services |
| Mobile | Serato DJ for iOS, with library transfer | rekordbox for iOS and Android |
| Strength | Scratch, open format, controller breadth | Pioneer CDJ and club-standard export |
rekordbox remains the safe choice if you play on club CDJs, since it's the native export format for Pioneer gear and the broader AlphaTheta ecosystem. Serato DJ Pro is the pick for scratch and open-format DJs, for the widest spread of third-party controllers, and now for anyone who wants a laptop set to follow them onto a phone. The outright 299 USD license also spares you a subscription, which rekordbox doesn't offer on its paid tiers.
Who Serato DJ 5.0 is for
Update if you already run Serato and mix anything with live tempo movement, because Lucid Beatgrids is the fix DJs have asked for over many releases. It's also an easy yes if you want your prepared crates on an iPhone or iPad, or if you juggle more than one streaming service in a set. Even on the free Lite tier, Lucid Beatgrids and Open Streaming are included.
Hold off only if your library is huge and perfectly gridded already, since re-analyzing everything takes time and the old grids stay untouched until you do. And if you live on club CDJs, rekordbox export still matters more than anything in this release.
How much does Serato DJ 5.0 cost?
The update itself is free for current users. Serato DJ Lite remains free. Serato DJ Pro costs 11.99 USD per month, or 299 USD for a one-time license. The new Serato DJ Suite is 14.99 USD per month or 499 USD outright, and it bundles DJ Pro, all Expansion packs, Serato DJ for iOS, and Serato Studio. The Serato DJ for iOS app is a free download with limited features. Full access costs 149 USD outright, or comes with the Suite subscription.
FAQ
Is Serato DJ 5.0 worth updating to?
Yes, especially for the Lucid Beatgrids engine. Automatic tempo tracking and better downbeat detection cut the manual gridding that has frustrated Serato users for years. The update is free for existing users, so there's little reason to wait.
Does Serato DJ 5.0 work on iPhone and iPad?
The desktop software stays on macOS and Windows. Serato DJ for iOS is a separate free app, and Serato DJ 5.0 adds iOS Transfer to send your crates, cue points, and beatgrids to it.
What is the difference between Lucid Beatgrids Flexible and Fixed analysis?
Flexible is the new default and tracks tempo changes across a track. Fixed assumes one steady tempo and suits tracks that never drift. You can switch per track, and existing songs need re-analyzing to use the new grids.
Do I lose my old beatgrids when I update?
No. Serato doesn't overwrite existing beatgrids. You re-analyze a track only when you want it to use Lucid Beatgrids.
Verdict
Serato DJ 5.0 spends its energy where it counts. Lucid Beatgrids answers the oldest complaint about the software, and automatic tempo tracking is the kind of change you feel on every set with a tricky record. Open Streaming and Cue Loops are useful rather than flashy, and iOS Transfer quietly extends what a Serato library can do. The update is free for current users, and its two biggest features reach even the Lite tier. If you DJ with Serato, update it.
