Reason Studios has made its virtual Rack free. On August 27, 2026 the company released Reason Free, a version of its iconic instrument-and-effect Rack that loads as a plugin inside any DAW and hands over 15 devices that never expire and carry no watermark. For a suite that spent two decades as a paid flagship, giving away this much of it is a real shift.

What is Reason Free?
Reason has always been built around a rack. The Echo is a characterful delay. Audiomatic is a one-knob retro-transformer for lo-fi and vintage colour. The RV7000 MkII is Reason's advanced reverb, a serious algorithmic unit with a full EQ and gate section built in. MClass Maximizer is a loudness maximiser for glueing and pushing a bus.
The six utilities are where the Rack's routing philosophy shows. Combinator lets you wrap several devices into one patch with macro controls, so you can build and save your own multi-device instruments. Pulsar is a dual LFO for modulating anything in the rack. Scales and Chords is a MIDI helper that keeps you in key and turns single notes into chords. The two Spider units split and merge audio and CV, and the MIDI Out Device sends MIDI from the Rack to external gear. These are the tools that turn a pile of devices into a patched instrument.
