OPL is discoDSP's emulation of the Yamaha OPL2 (YM3812), the two-operator FM chip that produced the game and demoscene audio of AdLib and early Sound Blaster cards. Built on the open-source ymfm chip library by Aaron Giles, it delivers the authentic, slightly brittle FM tone that chiptune and retro producers want, with OPL2 percussion mode and SBI preset import from the classic era.
Verified 25 August 2026: version 3.0 released 10 August 2026, $49 for new buyers, $9.99 on iOS, and a free upgrade for existing owners. Version 3.0 brings all eight OPL3 waveforms to every operator (up from four) and raises oversampling to 16x. Runs as VST, VST3, AU, AAX, and standalone on Windows 10+, macOS 10.14+ (Apple Silicon native), and Linux. It targets a narrower, more authentic niche than six-operator synths like Dexed and FM8.
