Materia

AudioThing / 39 euros (intro, from 69)

Materia is AudioThing's additive re-synthesizer: it breaks any sample into up to 96 harmonic partials and rebuilds it as a playable, editable instrument.

Il verdetto Dubspot

Il verdetto Dubspot

A focused, affordable additive-resynthesis instrument that gives sound designers per-partial spectral control most synths never expose, in exchange for a specialist, non-plug-and-play workflow.

Ideale per Sound designers who want to take real recordings apart at the harmonic level and rebuild them into evolving textures, bells and formant pads.

Pros

  • Resynthesises any sample into up to 96 individually editable partials
  • A 128-point envelope on every partial, unusually deep for the price
  • Physical-modelling resonator plus echo, phaser and waveshaper FX
  • Cross-platform: macOS, Windows and Linux, with a free demo

Cons

  • Specialist additive workflow, not a quick preset-and-play synth
  • Launch price is an intro offer, not the standing price
  • Deep per-partial editing has a learning curve

Field notes

Panoramica

Materia is AudioThing's additive re-synthesizer, and it occupies a corner of synthesis most producers rarely touch directly. Instead of scanning stored wavetables or carving a tone down with filters, it builds sound from individual sine partials, and it seeds those partials by analysing a sample you load. Drop in a vocal, a cymbal or a synth one-shot and Materia decomposes it into as many as 96 harmonic components you can edit one by one.

Its real depth is per-partial control. Every partial carries its own frequency, amplitude, phase and a 128-point envelope with editable duration and sustain loop points, which is an unusually fine level of control at this price. You can hold the low harmonics while the upper ones decay, graft new overtones onto a real recording with Add Empty Partials, or detune the stack into something metallic. A 10-type filter, two envelopes and two drawable LFOs shape the result, and four effects, led by a physical-modelling resonator that mimics pipes, plates and springs, give it body.

The trade-off is that Materia is a specialist. It is not a preset-and-play synth for instant bass and leads, and its partial editing rewards curiosity rather than speed. Against a multi-engine synth like Arturia Pigments it does far less overall, but it goes much deeper on resynthesis, and its per-partial envelopes do something Pigments cannot. For sound designers who start from real audio, that focus is the point. Read the full first look at AudioThing Materia for the complete feature breakdown.

Materia is an additive re-synthesizer. It analyses a loaded sample into up to 96 harmonic partials, each with its own frequency, amplitude, phase and envelope, then lets you reshape them and play the rebuilt sound polyphonically.

How much does Materia cost?

Materia launched at 39 euros, down from a regular 69 euros. A free demo is available that inserts short silences and disables saving, and a licence covers up to three computers.

What formats and systems does Materia support?

It runs as VST2, VST3, AU, AAX and CLAP in 64-bit hosts, on macOS 10.13 or newer, Windows 7 or newer, and Ubuntu 20.04 or newer.
