Massive XL is Native Instruments' new flagship wavetable synth, billed as the latest generation of the Massive line. It builds on Massive X, keeping its open routing and signature grit, and loads existing Massive X presets and Expansions directly.
The headline addition is a Preset Generator that builds a playable preset from any sample, with stem separation along the way and no synthesis knowledge required. Around it sit a Mutator and Randomizer for guided variation, Morpher and Animator for performable movement, and ten oscillator modes drawing on hundreds of wavetables. Polyphonic aftertouch, animated modulation feedback and an edit history round out the workflow.
It installs as VST, VST3, AU and AAX on macOS, and VST, VST3 and AAX on Windows, and does not currently run in standalone mode. It is $99 at Plugin Boutique and Native Instruments until 3 January 2027, rising to $199, Massive X owners can update for $49, and a free Massive XL Player is available. Set against Serum 2, Vital and Pigments 6, its distinctive pitch is the Massive character paired with sample-to-preset generation. The full first look is in our Massive XL feature.
