88emu, also labelled 88EmuPlayer, is a free, open-source emulator of Roland's Sound Canvas modules from The Usual Suspects. Rather than sampling the hardware, it recreates the modules' internal electronics and runs their original firmware on emulated CPUs and sound chips, so the instrument selection, voice allocation, effects, and MIDI handling come from the real device code.
It supports multiple Sound Canvas units, including the SC-88 Pro and SC-55mkII, from a single download, and runs on Windows, macOS, and Linux. Two caveats matter: it is a standalone application today, with VST, VST3, AU, LV2, and CLAP builds still in development, and it needs a firmware ROM image that you supply yourself, since that code is copyrighted and not distributed.
