FabFilter Pro-C 2 vs CLA-2A is a choice between a compressor with eight styles and a single electro-optical character. Pro-C 2 shows you the gain reduction and lets you change the behavior. CLA-2A gives you the opto tube curve Chris Lord-Alge's name is attached to, and very few knobs. In October 2026 the buying path has shifted. New FabFilter compressor licences on the major stores are Pro-C 3. CLA-2A is on a deep discount that ends today.

What each compressor is for
Pro-C 2 is a stereo dynamics processor with a large gain-reduction display. The eight styles are Clean, Classic, Opto, Vocal, Mastering, Bus, Punch, and Pumping. Clean and Classic stay out of the way on a bus. Opto and Vocal move more slowly and more musically. Mastering stays surgical. Punch and Pumping are the obvious ones, for drums and sidechain motion. Side-chain EQ, variable stereo linking, mid/side, up to 4x oversampling, and Audition Triggering are all in the same window. Audition Triggering solos the transients that are driving the detector, which is why the plug-in teaches compression as well as applying it.
The weakness is color, and age. Pro-C 2 will not turn a vocal into a tube opto recording. Its Opto style is a program-dependent timing choice, not a model of a specific LA-2A. FabFilter has since released Pro-C 3, with more styles, added character and saturation, Atmos support, and higher oversampling. Pro-C 2 remains a precise compressor. It is no longer the one FabFilter is selling as the current product.
CLA-2A models an electro-optical tube compressor and limiter. You get compressor and limiter modes, a sidechain frequency filter, and zero latency. The control set is the hardware idea: peak reduction and gain, not attack, release, ratio, and knee as separate knobs. Presets from the CLA series are included. Formats on the Best Service listing are AAX, AU, VST2, and VST3 for Mac and Windows. A new Waves purchase there includes 12 months of the Waves Update Plan.
The weakness is range. One character does not cover a drum bus, a transparent vocal leveler, and a mastering pass. There is no multiband mode and no style menu. If the vocal does not want that optical release, another plug-in has to do the job. You also inherit Waves' update plan. After the included year, updates are a separate decision, which changes the real cost of a $35 compressor.

Pro-MB is the FabFilter tool when the problem is one frequency band. Plugin Boutique lists it at $199 with no discount. It is a multiband dynamics processor, up to six bands, and it is the wrong comparison if all you need is a vocal leveler. It is the right one when Pro-C 2 and CLA-2A both leave a 3 kHz honk untouched.
CLA-76 is the FET sibling, the 1176-style grab, not the opto bloom. Own CLA-2A for vocals and bass that should swell. Reach for a FET when the transient itself has to move.
Where Pro-C 2 still wins
Use the compressor you already installed when the session needs three different behaviors before lunch. A drum bus on Punch, a vocal on Vocal, and a synth bass on Clean is one plug-in with three presets. CLA-2A would do the vocal, maybe the bass, and then get out of the way on the drums. Pro-C 2's side-chain EQ also lets you stop a kick from ducking a whole mix while the vocal still crosses the threshold. CLA-2A's sidechain filter is simpler. It is a frequency tilt into the detector, not a full equalizer.
Mid/side is the other Pro-C 2 habit that CLA-2A does not replace. You can hold the center of a mix and let the sides stay open, or the reverse. Mastering-style leveling across a stereo bus is a Pro-C job. CLA-2A on a mix bus is a color choice, and an easy one to overdo, because peak reduction and gain are doing all the work.
If you already paid for Pro-C 2, the £72 upgrade at Thomann is the decision, not a second compressor brand. Pro-C 3 adds the styles and the character controls Pro-C 2 was criticized for lacking. Read the full Pro-C 3 licence at £145 only if you do not already own Pro-C 1 or 2.
Where CLA-2A still wins
Optical compression is a feel. The release lengthens as the gain reduction deepens, which is why vocals sit forward without the syllables sounding clamped. Pro-C 2's Opto style approximates that timing. It does not add the tube path. If the record needs that thickness, CLA-2A at the current price is the cheaper way to get it, and a dedicated model will beat a style preset.
Tracking is the other win. Zero latency means you can print or monitor CLA-2A without a delay compensation surprise. Pro-C 2 at 4x oversampling is a mixing choice, not a tracking choice. For a vocal chain that is compressor, then EQ, then send, CLA-2A disappears into the chain. Pro-C 2 invites you to watch the display. That is useful at mix time and distracting when the singer is in the room.
The price window is the practical reason to act. Plugin Boutique has CLA-2A at $34.99 from $149, 76 percent off, through 14 October 2026. Best Service lists $35.70 from $110.69 excluding VAT. Tomorrow the Plugin Boutique figure goes back to $149 unless Waves extends it. Do not buy it at $149 if you only needed the opto curve and a stock compressor is close enough.
What to buy in October 2026
Buy CLA-2A this week if the vocal, bass, or room mic wants optical gain reduction and you do not own a model you trust. $34.99 is the number. Budget for the Waves Update Plan after the included year if you care about staying on the current installer.
Stay on Pro-C 2 if it is already on your templates and you are not missing saturation or Atmos. The eight styles still cover bus, vocal, and drum duties. Spending $35 on CLA-2A beside it is reasonable. Spending full price on a second do-everything compressor is not.
Buy Pro-C 3 if you are new to FabFilter or you want the upgrade. Plugin Boutique lists Pro-C 3 at $149 from $199, 25 percent off, through 20 October 2026. Best Service lists $169 excluding VAT, with $179 shown next to it. Thomann is £145 including VAT for a full licence and £72 including VAT to upgrade from Pro-C 1 or 2.
