Das Dubspot-Urteil

A drum instrument with an unusually clear idea — one source sound becomes a whole coherent kit — and the auto-slicer plus per-pad shaping tools turn the free version's fun concept into a real production tool.

Am besten für Producers and sound designers who want original, cohesive kits built from their own recordings rather than assembled from commercial one-shot packs.

Pros

  • Auto-slicer detects every transient in a source, with a sensitivity control
  • 16 pads, each with Warp, Impact, Instability, Tone Shift, Super and a 3-band EQ
  • 8 stereo output pairs for mixing the kit like a multitrack session
  • Records straight from a DAW track or live input, up to two minutes
  • Presets are compatible in both directions with the free VRAC

Cons

  • Public list price not yet published on the Beatsurfing store
  • No dedicated trial — the free VRAC stands in as the demo
  • Every kit inherits the character of its single source
  • Drumification models are morph targets rather than editable engines

Field notes

Überblick

VRAC+ is the paid, feature-complete version of Beatsurfing's free VRAC, released in late July 2026. Its premise is drumification: load any audio — a vocal take, a field recording, a guitar chord — and a Drumify control reshapes it into a percussive hit, which an X/Y pad then morphs across a bank of kick, snare, hat and clap models. Because every element shares one source, the resulting kit is cohesive by construction rather than by EQ.

The paid version is where the concept becomes workable. An auto-slicer with a sensitivity control finds every transient in the source, so you step between hits with the arrow keys instead of hunting for a sample start by hand. A Record In function captures audio straight from a DAW track or a live input, up to two minutes, with no bouncing files in and out. Sample length support jumps from 60 seconds to 60 minutes.

Pad count doubles to 16, and each pad gets a real chain: Warp for three-band dynamic reshaping, Impact for transient shaping, Instability for per-hit randomness that stops repeated triggers sounding machine-gunned, Tone Shift for spectral movement, Super for saturation and stereo width, and a 3-band EQ. Velocity drives Length and Tone Shift as well as Volume. Eight stereo output pairs let the kit be mixed as a multitrack session, and you can drag out a single pad or the whole kit as audio.

Alongside your own material, VRAC+ ships a library recorded specifically for the plugin with a Brussels-based professional foley artist — source textures meant to be mangled rather than finished drum sounds. Presets move freely between VRAC and VRAC+, so upgrading strands nothing.

The trade-offs are inherent to the design. Every kit carries the character of its single source, which is the whole point but also the ceiling. The drumification models are morph targets, not editable synthesis engines. And Beatsurfing has not yet published a public list price, with VRAC+ still in its Early Bird window at the time of writing; the company's other instruments list between 79 and 149 EUR.

It solves a different problem from XO or Battery 4, both of which organise and trigger one-shots you already own. VRAC+ manufactures them. If your kicks sound like everyone else's, that is the argument. Producers who prefer a curated library approach can look at XO through Best Service instead.

FAQ

What is the difference between VRAC and VRAC+?

VRAC is free and offers 8 pads, one stereo output, manual sample start and 60-second samples. VRAC+ adds auto-slicing, DAW recording, 16 pads with full per-pad sound design, 8 stereo output pairs, 60-minute sample support and global filtering. Presets are compatible in both directions.

Is there a trial version of VRAC+?

No. Beatsurfing treats the free VRAC as the light version and points prospective buyers there instead. VRAC+ carries a 14-day refund policy.

Can VRAC+ record audio directly?

Yes. Route a DAW track or a live input to the plugin's sidechain or audio input and press REC. Recordings of up to two minutes land in the recorded-samples folder ready to slice.

Does VRAC+ include a sequencer?

No. VRAC+ is a playable instrument rather than a groovebox — you trigger and program it from your DAW, with MIDI Learn on any parameter and choke groups for hats.
