Both come from Output and both are effects, which is why they end up in the same search — but they solve opposite problems. Portal is a granular engine that fractures audio into grains for texture and motion, while Thermal is a two-stage distortion engine that treats saturation as sound design. The overlap is the brand, not the job.
The key difference
The deciding line is what each one actually does to your signal. Portal takes time and pitch apart, smearing, freezing and rearranging grains to manufacture movement and ambience that was never in the source; Thermal keeps the signal intact and adds harmonic content, routing two distortion stages through filters and dynamics to sculpt grit that breathes. Portal's single circular XY macro hides its complexity for instant, preset-first results, whereas Thermal exposes a deep drag-to-modulate patchbay with LFOs, envelopes and macros for hands-on tone building. One is chosen for transformation and texture, the other for character and drive — and no amount of tweaking makes either cross into the other's territory.
Choose Portal if you want to turn ordinary loops, vocals or pads into evolving granular textures and transitions with almost no menu-diving.
Choose Thermal if you design bass, risers and rhythmic grit and want distortion you can route, filter and modulate like an instrument.
Which should you buy?
There is no overall winner here because they aren't substitutes; the near-identical scores (Portal 8.4, Thermal 8.3) reflect two tools that are each excellent at different things. If your problem is static, lifeless sound that needs motion, atmosphere or glitch, Portal wins and its $149 is fair for a granular workflow this playable. If your problem is a source that needs weight, grit or evolving distortion, Thermal wins and at $75 it is the stronger value — roughly half the price for a deeper, more modulatable engine.

Portal vs Thermal: FAQ
Is Portal or Thermal better for beginners?
Portal is friendlier out of the box: its single XY macro and 250+ finished-sounding presets get you to a usable result in seconds. Thermal has real depth and a learning curve, so beginners can lean on its presets but will only unlock its full range once they understand its two-stage routing and modulation system.
Portal is $149 and Thermal is $75 — which is the better value?
It depends on the job, since they don't overlap. Thermal delivers a deep, modulatable distortion engine for half the price, making it the stronger value pound-for-pound; Portal costs more but is one of the few plugins that makes granular synthesis this playable, so it earns its price if texture is a recurring part of your sound. Both are also included in the Output One subscription if you want access without a large upfront buy.
Can Thermal do granular textures like Portal, or Portal do distortion like Thermal?
Not really — they work on fundamentally different principles. Thermal adds harmonic distortion and saturation but never chops audio into grains, so it can't produce Portal's shimmering, time-stretched ambient motion. Portal can pitch and mangle sound but isn't a distortion tool, so for aggressive grit or evolving saturation you'll still want Thermal. Producers who need both effects typically own both.
