If you want to start building your own synth sounds, one of the quickest and most effective ways is by understanding and using synthesizer envelopes. Envelopes control how a sound changes over time, giving it character and life. Here's a straightforward guide to understanding and using synthesizer envelopes.

What is an Envelope?

An envelope controls the amplitude or other parameters of a sound over time. It shapes how the sound evolves from the moment you press a key until after you release it.

The Four Stages of an Envelope

  • Attack: How quickly the sound reaches its maximum level after you press a key.
  • Decay: How fast the sound drops to the sustain level after the attack peak.
  • Sustain: The level the sound holds while the key is pressed.
  • Release: How long it takes for the sound to die away after the key is released.

Using Envelopes Creatively

Besides controlling volume, envelopes can shape filters, pitch, and other modulation destinations:

Filter Envelopes

By applying envelopes to a filter cutoff, you can create sounds that open up or close over time, producing bright or muffled tones dynamically.

Pitch Envelopes

Modulating pitch with an envelope can create percussive or plucky effects, useful in basses and leads.

Tips for Crafting Sounds with Envelopes

  • Start with a simple envelope shape and adjust each stage to see its effect.
  • Slow attack times create soft, swelling sounds.
  • Fast release times make sounds stop abruptly.
  • Experiment with non-traditional envelope shapes for unique effects.

Understanding and mastering envelopes can dramatically improve your sound design skills, helping you create more dynamic and expressive synthesizer sounds.
