For this week’s installment of Dubspot Radio Podcast, we are very pleased to introduce internationally-respected DJ, music producer, and industry veteran Wayne Hunter a.k.a. DJ Smash to bless us with a diverse and solid mix of club music. Most of these tracks are original productions, remixes, and edits produced over his long career. In our extended interview, DJ Smash talks to Dubspot Radio’s Pozibelle about his early origins, the evolution of music production and DJ performance technology, inside scoops and the various record labels he’s been involved with over the years, current projects, and much more.
Working within the music industry in multiple roles for the past 30+ years, DJ Smash (born Wayne Hunter) has worn many hats; DJ, remixer, programmer, graphic illustrator, recording engineer, label founder, A&R, compilation producer and recently, mentor for upcoming independent artists attempting to make their way in the ever-changing music industry.
Raised in New York City, he’s had the unique experience of living in 4 out of 5 boroughs – being raised in Brooklyn, South Bronx, Rego Park, Harlem and East Village in New York City, he learned the art of djing by watching more experienced DJs perform in parks and block parties, masterfully working the crowds and sound system.
Smash muses “ultimately, my greatest lesson was learning to observe and read different audiences and play the right tune at the best possible moment”.
As a budding DJ and producer, he was primarily influenced by R&B, Funk, Reggae / Calypso, Disco, Hip Hop, early Techno and House.
Smash has shared the bill and stage with Gilles Peterson, Norman Jay, François K, Danny Krivit, King Britt, Nicodemus, Miguel Migs, Jon Cutler, DJ Romain and many others.
Smash got his start in New York City in 1987 with residencies at legendary clubs such as Save The Robots (’88-’93), Nell’s (’92-’93) and Giant Step (’90-’95). Since then, travelled the globe, spinning clubs, festivals and concerts in UK, Scotland, Germany, Austria, France, Italy, Russia, Switzerland, Sweden, Singapore, South Korea and China.
Smash released his first record as Transphonic on Nu Groove Records (early House music label in New York) in 1988. From there, he produced and remixed for an array of labels including Eightball, New Breed (co-founder, A&R), and worked as consultant and series producer for legendary jazz label Blue Note Records (Phonography Series, Blue Break Beats series) also writing liner notes for several releases for the label.
