About a year and a half.
How was your Dubspot experience?
My experience at Dubspot has been great, and quite interesting. I took the DJ Extensive Package (tracks 01 – 06) and Turntablism 1. I had just moved to NY from Philly when I first discovered Dubspot. I like all types of music and wouldn’t label myself as just a hip hop DJ, but growing up in Philadelphia, I was especially into hip hop. I always associated turntables & DJing with hip hop & scratching records, and DJs with people like DJ Premier and Jazzy Jeff. Consequently, I had thought that Dubspot would be a DJ school for hip hop heads.
I’ve wanted to be a DJ since I first started listening to hip hop as a kid, and the techniques behind turntablism and scratching records had remained a great mystery to me for the longest time. When the course started, to my surprise, I was the only hip hop head in my class. I was a little disappointed at first, but in the long run, it actually helped me a lot in many different ways.
Dubspot exposed me to a whole new realm and aspects of DJing, got me deeper into various genres of music, and taught me techniques used in playing different genres of music that I wouldn’t have experienced and learned had Dubspot been a school for just hip hop DJs. And just as I was completing track 06, DJ Shiftee, the DMC World Champion DJ, had joined Dubspot as a staff and the instructor of the newly created Turntablism course. It was the perfect timing.
I took the very first turntablism class that Shiftee taught, and the mystery behind turntablism and scratching has been solved! Simply, my experience at Dubspot couldn’t have been better. I am planning on taking advanced Turntablism courses and Music Production courses at Dubspot in the future and am looking forward to taking what I learned as a DJ further and incorporating them in making my own music, as being a DJ/Producer is, and has always been, my goal and a dream.
