Ital (Mi Ami / Planet Mu) @ Dubspot – ‘Wireless’ Video Interview w/ Raz Mesinai

In this new episode of Dubspot’s Wireless series, educator, composer, and producer Raz Mesinai (formerly known as Badawi) talks with rising Brooklyn-based electronic music producer and musician Daniel Martin-McCormick who is a member of indie dancepunk band Mi Ami. Martin-McCormick has released solo work as Sex Worker and Ital on 100% Silk and Not Not Fun imprints. Earlier this year, he released his debut album as Ital titled Hive Mind on Planet Mu. His conversation with Raz ranges from influences which includes Black Flag, Fugazi, and Bad Brains to electronic music production  tips and techniques to the problems with MIDI and the invasion of NYC by guitar players and indie rock bands. Later this week, on Friday April 20 Ital will perform alongside other genre defying electronic musicians on the Unsound Festival New York Bunker bill including Demdike Stare, Hieroglyphic Being, Laurel Halo, Monolake, and Dubspot Instructor/multi-media artist Aaron Taylor Kuffner.

If you’ve heard Daniel Martin-McCormick’s name recently, it would probably have been either in association with his disco/punk/echo band ‘Mi Ami’, or as ‘Sex Worker’ on the Not Not Fun label, or finally as ‘Ital’ on NNF’s sister label 100% Silk, recording quite different sounding house music to this album.

Raised in Washington DC, Daniel has a history in the city’s hardcore scene, he was in the Dischord records signed ‘Black Eyes’, but was also making dance inspired tracks at the same period, but coming from a very different angle from your average guy with a copy of Logic and a working knowledge of dance music’s history.
