Sometimes people ask me, “Shiftee, have you always been so spicy?” To which I reply, “yes,” and then do a little dance. However, I am a liar (despite being a fantastic dancer). Once upon a time, when the words Shiftee and Salsa were literally synonymous and Gmail was something only gangsters got, I had no spice in the field of scratch. My chops wouldn’t chop, my orbits refused to orbit, and my swing flares really didn’t have much flare at all. What was I missing? Jalepeños? Habaneros? Love? No, I needed correct hand positioning on the turntable and mixer. Watch this video, my dear salsa students. For only then will the spice in your heart become the spice in your hands.
