Dubspot Instructor Spotlight – Video Profile: Kiva (Adios Babylon / Brooklyn)

This week we are proud turn the spotlight on one of the original Dubspot Instructors, Brooklyn-based artist, producer, educator, and Adios Babylon label owner Kiva.

In this video profile, we feature Brooklyn-based artist, producer, and educator Kiva and talk to him about about his early musical influences, learning to play multiple instruments (guitar, piano, trumpet, drums) at a young age, and his embracing a diverse range of music from Afro-Cuban and West African music to punk and hip hop. Kiva also talks about teaching electronic music production with Ableton Live at Dubspot, combining traditional musical instruments with electronic music technology. Kiva also details the inspiring and humbling experience of teaching people from all over the world how to develop and realize their creative vision.

Biography:
DJ Kiva is the founder of NYC based recording studio and record label, Adios Babylon. Kiva has released numerous albums and has produced and remixed for many soul, reggae, & dance music artists. His style blends elements of dub, afro-cuban, soul, hip hop, and futuristic electronics. He has delivered his music through high energy performances and DJ sets at live events from Brooklyn to Berlin.

DJ Kiva’s production and remixes have been released on such labels as Adios Babylon, Destroy All Concepts, King Tubby’s Dub Heritage Foundation, Tommy Boy, and Kindred Spirits. His music has received airplay on BBC’s 1Xtra and Sirius Satellite Radio. He has appeared as a guest speaker & performer on Public Enemy founder Hank Shocklee’s Producer Panel at Remix Magazine’s “Remix Hotel NYC” event. Kiva has toured extensively around the globe as live guitarist for hip hop groups Shape of Broad Minds and Willie Isz featuring Jneiro Jarel and Khujo Goodie of Goodie Mob and has performed at such festivals as Sonar (Spain), Hove (Norway), Roskilde (Denmark), and Montreaux Jazz (Switzerland). – For more, head over to Adios Babylon.

This program is about learning Ableton Live by going through the entire process of being an artist, by developing your own sound through a series of sketches and experimentation. After a level of getting familiar with the tools that Ableton has to offer, you will then develop your sonic ideas into full-length tracks. You will be exposed to a variety of approaches to arrangement and composition, storytelling techniques, ways of creating tension and drama in your music. At the end of the day, it is the sum total of your choices as an artist that define your sound, and levels 2 – 6 will give you the experience of actually completing tracks to add to your portfolio.
