One of New Zealand’s finest musical exports, dubstep duo Truth (Deep Medi / Get Darker) visited Dubspot NYC this spring to present a live streaming workshop on sound design and music production. Following the workshop, we talked to them about the early stages of their career, their musical influences, getting signed to Deep Medi, the state of the drum and bass/dubstep scene in New Zealand, the music technology and production tools they use, workflow and creative process, making an album versus releasing singles, traveling around the world, and incorporating Serato and digital DJing in their sets.
Respected across the globe, Truth (Andre Fernandez and Tristan Roake) have cut a clear pathway through the international dubstep scene as both world-class producers and party-rocking DJs. On the nightclub and festival circuits, the fruits of their labor have included three European tours, three American tours, countless Australian and Asian spot dates and a loyal following across New Zealand. They have built this performance presence through DJ support from Mala, Skream, Joe Nice, Youngsta, Hatcha and N-Type, giving their music an advance presence at key club nights like DMZ in London, Club Love in New York and through seminal radio stations such as BBC Radio One, Kiss Fm and Rinse FM.
Earlier this year, Truth delivered an excellent mix for our podcast series loaded with exclusive tracks and unreleased dubs from the likes of Kromestar, Von D, Megalodon, Killawatt, and their own tracks including collaborations with Yayne.
