The Petti Test – Pt 2: Recreating “In for the Kill” Bass – Skream, La Roux

In the second installment of The Petti Test, Chris breaks down the magic in Skream’s chart-topping remix of La Roux’s “In For The Kill.” This song set the pace for dubstep remixes and is a sound that many people continue to try and recreate. In this tutorial Chris Petti explains and demonstrates how to create this sound in a step by step process.

In this installment of The Petti Test, I will be dissecting a bass sound that we hear in a number of current electronic styles. This example is taken from the Skream remix of La Roux’s “In For the Kill.” It’s a very deep and pulsating bass, most likely sampled from an analog synthesizer. The sound has been described to me as a bass like you would hear on a Drum and Bass tune. In this video I will break the sound down and recreate it on a MiniMoog Voyager. I will then complete the picture by sampling it, as was done with most DnB productions, and create the subtle volume pulsations. I hope that you all enjoy!
