Shlohmo Video Interview @ Friends of Friends 2-Year Anniversary Party by Dubspot

In this Dubspot-produced video, Shlohmo shares his insights into the joys and dangers of becoming associated with a particular scene, his Ableton Live setup, and gleefully raps Juicy J’s verses on the monstrous, Lex Luger-produced “A Zip and A Double Cup.”

Earlier this summer Dubspot was honored to be a part of Los Angeles label Friends of Friends’ (FoF) 2 year anniversary party at Echo Plex in L.A. The party featured many of the label’s artists and affiliates, including Salva, Mexicans With Guns, Groundislava, Baths, and Shlohmo.

The party’s stellar lineup lead to a sold-out show at Echoplex, and ultimately a whole lot of smiling, sweaty friends rejoicing in 2 years of strong musical output. If you’re new to the label, FoF graced the pages of Resident Advisor’s Label of the Month feature in July, where the label’s curator/owner Leeor Brown is profiled alongside the label’s aforementioned artists. To continue the FoF celebration, and solidify the party’s success in the hearts and minds of Friends of Friends supporters, Dubspot caught up with each of the artists to chat about their studio setups, the FoF label, and the future of their music.

First up, we have Los Angeles born and based producer Shlohmo (a.k.a. Henry Laufer), whose debut album Bad Vibes comes out on FoF August 9th. The prospect of a Shlohmo full-length comes after a remarkably consistent musical output over the last few years. Since Laufer had the great fortune of appearing on Mary Anne Hobbs’ BBC Radio 1 program with a short mix of tunes, he has gained steady momentum as a leader in L.A.’s beat scene movement, defying any concerns that L.A.’s creative melting pot will be watered down an influx beat scene aspirants. Comfortably standing aside from Brainfeeder massive, Laufer manages the difficult balancing act of association with the venerable Friend of Friends crew, while keeping things extra close and personal with his WEDIDIT collective.

Laufer’s decision to stay personally and creatively intimate is also represented in his sound—a heavily felt concoction of idiosyncratic beat grids, bass, and layers that speak to a soft-spoken exterior, and a restless, insatiable creative interior. This is especially heard on his weighty “Hot Boxing the Cockpit,” or his wonderfully light-hearted and all together slapping re-work of Khia’s “My Neck, My Back,” one of many Shlohmo bootlegs that range from Burial to Waka Flocka Flame.

In fact, in anticipation of Shlohmo’s record, he is offering another collection of his inimitable hip-hop/r&b remixes over on WEDIDIT’s website. The pack includes remixes of Waka Flocka’s “Hard In the Paint,” Kelis’ “Milkshake,” and Gucci Mane’s “I’m Da Shit.” These will likely hold you over for the weekend, at least until Bad Vibes drops, but you’ll soon be seeking Shlohmo’s live set after you’ve witnessed his impassioned live set in search of greater low-end intimacy, and a Shlohmo stage presence that’s so soft, it’s hard.
