Fast-rising techno producer and DJ Seth Troxler stops by Dubspot NYC earlier this year for an interview in which he talked about his early introduction to electronic music (at the tender age of eight), collaborating and developing a relationship with labels and producers in and outside of his local scene, traveling to Europe and playing random gigs, and building a resume that include releases on some of electronic music’s finest imprints such as Minus, Spectra, BPitch Control, Circus Company, Wagon Repair, and Esperanza, and also playing gigs and festivals around the world from London’s Fabric to Montreal’s MUTEK, not to mention holding multiple residencies in clubs in Berlin and Zurich.
Born in Kalamazoo, Michigan, Seth started listening to house music when he was about eight years old. His mother and stepfather were both involved in Detroit’s house music scene. Seth explained how he and his friends “began listening to records and tapes, a lot of Dance Mania records and old house music, records and cassettes” in their early teens. He received his first turntables at age fifteen, and starting DJing during freshman year in high school. He attended the same school as Matthew Dear.
Seth discussed a lot more in this interview – from his various current projects, recent releases such as Boogybytes Vol.05 mix CD, which came out on Ellen Allien’s BPitch Control label and his ongoing collaboration wth Ryan Crosson and Lee Curtiss as Visionquest, which will materialize as an incredible live audio/visual performance piece (they plan to consult good friend Richie Hawtin on the piece) to revealing the most useful advice he’d ever received as a DJ, and his general philosophy on DJing – “DJing is like bar-tending. You’re there to make drinks, if they enjoy the drink, everyone is happy. Observe the crowd, and respond to them.”
