Reason 5 & Record 1.5 / BLOCKS & Dr. Octo Rex

Propellerhead has given a sneak peek of the forthcoming Reason 5 and Record 1.5, with a new teaser video showing some exciting new features that will be included in updated versions. Keep in mind this is only what they want the public see so far. Rest assured, more will be coming soon.

First, however, are BLOCKS…

Blocks will alter the work flow in Reason/Record, and allow for much faster assembly of your musical parts. Think of it as sub-sequences inside a main sequence. This breaks the boundaries of writing and recording all of our music in a linear fashion in Reason/Record. The Blocks function will allow us to create sections, parts, or segments of our entire tune independently and then chain them together in a very malleable way that looks to be both intuitive and simple, yet very powerful.

Second, DR. OCTO REX…

This the follow-up to the enormously popular Dr. Rex Loop Player that has existed in Reason’s rack since version 1.0. This device will allow for 8 Rex loops to be loaded at once, and lots subsequent functionality. First, this will allow users to switch seamlessly through multiple similar Rex loops. An example of this would be with drum loop variations and fills. Second, slices can be edited far more extensively than with the Dr. Rex allowing for more mangling and masking abilities of Rex Loops.

Stay tuned, we will have lots more coverage, tutorials, and review of Reason 5 and Record 1.5 coming soon…

The block idea is great as a concept but practically speaking I find the interface awkward – maybe next version will make it more intuitive.
It is so easy to set up various sections in the sequencer and copy/paste or move them. Also for clarity it is better to have a linear unfolding of the music as in a musical score.
