NAMM Week in LA: Experimental Electronic Music @ BL__K NOISE (Richard Devine, Vatican Shadow)

Heading to Los Angeles for NAMM this year? Trash Audio, Droid Behavior and Friendly Integration bring experimental electronic music to the evening agenda with Vatican Shadow, Drumcell, and Richard Devine at BL_K NOISE…

NAMM week is fast approaching (see our preview post from last week) and as always, half the excitement comes from attending the UNofficial performances, events and parties that surround the main convention in Anaheim. In past years we have attended some amazing ‘after-NAMM’ parties hosted by Ableton, Native Instruments, Trash Audio, and others, and have seen some great performances from artists including Monolake, Nortec Collective, Simply Robot, DJ Shiftee, and many more.

This year is no exception, and the event we are most looking forward to this time is BL_K NOISE, a night of experimental electronics hosted by the Trash Audio team together with LA promoters Droid Behavior and Friendly Integration. It will be held at Capsule Mastering Labs’ vinyl pressing plant + warehouse venue in Frogtown, just north of downtown LA next to the Los Angeles River.

Expect a night of analog and digital hardware performances from a stellar line-up of performers including sound design innovator Richard Devine (Detroit Underground, Warp, Schematic), Vatican Shadow, ex-Nine Inch Nails keyboardist Alessandro Cortini, Baseck, Drumcell of Droid Behavior, and more, armed with a variety of modular synthesizers, drum machines, and random noise generators. Vinyl production demos will be held throughout the night as well a direct-to-lacquer-disc recording of select performances.

We spoke to Droid Behavior co-founder and performing artist Drumcell about this event and the motivations behind BL__K NOISE:

We felt that in a world of laptop-based music, electronic music performances with hardware are underrepresented. There is something raw, dirty and visually appealing about seeing someone perform with a hardware synth or drum machine. Whether its the blinking lights or messy spaghetti of patch cables sticking out the back, in the end any serious piece of music hardware a real instrument that needs to be mastered and performed with. The artists who will be performing at BL__K NOISE are all people who truly inspire me musically and share the same passion and lust for analog gear.

We are also excited to do support vinyl culture by holding the event at an actual pressing plant and giving attendees a first-hand look into what it takes to make a vinyl record and hopefully give people a deeper appreciation for the medium.

Hopefully the event will inspire more hardware enthusiasts to break out their synths and drum machines and start performing with them…

For more details including advance tickets check the Trash Audio website. (Note that this is a limited-capacity venue and the event will almost certainly sell out in advance.)
