Movement 2011, Detroit: New iPhone App + Guide

This weekend music fans from around the world head to Detroit for a pilgrimage of sorts – a journey to the heart of techno that happens every year on Memorial Day weekend in the city’s Hart Plaza. Detroit tastemakers Paxahau are responsible for the production of Movement 2011 which takes place on May 28 – 30 in the heart of American industrialization. Having attended the festival for the past three years I can say that it’s a spectacular event to take in. The sensation of dancing to pounding beats in a (large and very cool) public park on the water makes for a great setting and the lineup of artists is always well-curated for fans of house and techno. While last year Plastikman headlined the festival with a mind-shattering performance, this year Carl Craig headlines and will bring back his 69 project – an early moniker he used that influenced techno deeply. There is also a wide selection of high-profile acts such as Fatboy Slim, Beardyman, Felix da Housecat, Aux 88, Green Velvet, Flying Lotus and Ben Klock. We are personally excited to see the addition of new artists like Ramadanman, Com Truise and Mike Servito (who stole the show at last year’s Bunker afterhours party.)
.

The most recent news that we’ve heard about Movement 2011 is the late addition of Ricardo Villalobos to the lineup. He was scheduled to perform at last year’s event but visa problems with the U.S. border didn’t allow him to perform. This created a massive stir at the event last year with rumors circulating that he may show up as a surprise (which didn’t happen.) Villalobos is one of the few top-ranked djs in the world who rarely makes it to the United States to perform so this is massive news to his fans and will no doubt be a draw for many.

If you are moved by what you’ve read so far and need to get yourself to Hart Plaza this weekend we have all the information you need. For starters, a three day pass to the festival will cost you a meager $70 (which gets you into the festival all three days from noon until the show ends) while daily passes are also offered for $35. A VIP pass is also sold for $150 and will get you into a private bar area along with other incentives like drink tickets and a “deluxe exclusive bathroom trailer.” The party starts every day at noon starting on May 28 and you can buy tickets on-site. The technologically inclined may be excited to hear that Paxahau is offering a new iPhone app that offers features like schedule information, map, friend finder, artist bios, and an alarm to remind you of performance times. You can read more at Paxahau or iTunes. The official Movement party ends at around 9pm each night so you’ll want to investigate the many smaller parties that happen around Detroit at night.
