Dubspot catches up with members of the electronic dancehall outfit Major Lazer, a collaborative music project headed by DJ/producer and Mad Decent mastermind Diplo. We chat with Jillionaire, Walshy Fire, and Diplo about musical inspiration, collaboration, live performance, music technology, hard work and perseverance!
Earlier this year, Dubspot caught up with Major Lazer a.k.a. Diplo, Jillionaire, and Walshy Fire, for a brief chat ahead of their set at Winter Music Conference 2013! In case you’re unfamiliar, Major Lazer is an electronic dancehall project created by DJ/producer and Mad Cecent impresario Diplo. Formerly a collaborative project with British DJ Switch, Diplo has since enlisted Walshy Fire and Jillionaire as group members. This year, they released Free the Universe, an album on which features guest appearances by Vampire Weekend’s Ezra Koenig, Dirty Projectors’ Amber Coffman, Flux Pavilion, Bruno Mars, Tyga, Wyclef Jean, Shaggy, and more, on the Secretly Canadian record label.
Dubspot talks to Walshy Fire, Jillionaire, and Diplo about musical inspiration and pushing new sounds and talents, their collaborative process and workflow, their production setup, performing live and creating remixes and edits on the fly with Ableton Live, Traktor and Pioneer CDJs. They also give advice for young artists – have originality and work hard!
