We are very proud to present a special installment of Dubspot Student Spotlight! In this edition, we turn the spotlight on three talented and remarkable Dubspot LA students — an accomplished tabla player and percussionist, an engineer turn DJ/producer, and  an “open format” DJ from Indio. Get to know Aditya Kalyanpur, So.M.I, and Subterrestrial!

Aditya Kalyanpur // Los Angeles via Mumbai, India


Aditya Kalyanpur is an accomplished tabla player and percussionist from Mumbai, India, who has made a distinguished career working with some of the most prestigious names in Indian classical, jazz, and fusion genres such as Pandit Shivkumar Sharma, AR Rahman, Shankar Mahadevan, Pandit Jasrajji, Larry Coryell, and many others. Aditya  began studying tabla and percussion at the age of five under the guidance of tabla maestro the late Alla Rakha Khan and his son Zakir Hussain. He developed his own style and build a tremendous repertoire of compositions and improvisational techniques as well as accompanied and collaborated with countless musicians around the globe. Always, looking to expand his musical vision, Aditya is currently studying Electronic Music Production at Dubspot Los Angeles.

So.M.I // Los Angeles via India


Los Angeles-based DJ/Producer So.M.I (a.k.a. Soumya Sejpal) is a classically trained composer with a degrees in Mechanical Engineering and Western Classical Music Composition. So.M.I has been DJing, producing, designing sounds and mixing for nearly a quarter decade. Wanting to expand his musical reach and education, So.M.I recently spent 6 months in Los Angeles, completing Dubspot’s DJ/Producer Master Program, where he collaborated with local artists and studied under Thavius Beck, DJ Endo, Luca Digitalboy Pretoliesi, DJ Rap, DJ Reborn, James Bernard, Emch Subatomic, Mike Parvizi, Esteban Adame and Viktor Carrillo. Besides Dance music So.M.I also composes music for films, video games, and commercials. He programmed an song “Ladio” for the Tamil film Ai – soundtrack composed by Oscar Winner Indian Composer AR Rahman (Slumdog Millionaire).

“Being a western classical trained composer and self-taught electronic dance music producer, I had limitations for improving my knowledge of production, sound designing, mixing and mastering and DJing. I decided to joined Dubpsot LA. I had an amazing experience learning from Dubspot instructors. I was already producing music and working for film composer A.R. Rahman before i joined Dubspot, but after realizing that I need to get more educated in order to make better music which can compete in the current music scene, I moved to LA. Jeremiah Contreras : Subterrestrial

Open format DJ Subterrestrial (a.k.a. jerimiah contreras) grew up in the Californian city of festivals Indio. Jerimiah was exposed to a diverse range music and art culture. “Festivals like Coachella serve as my annual inspiration”. Being a digital vinyl DJ allows him to apply a vast range of skills. His fast pace sets seamlessly blends hiphop with an array of electronic and other alternative genres . Heavy bass, sharp keys, and theatrical effects are a major influence on his track selection. “I enjoy performing one hour sets, the compressed time becomes the pressure to perform at my best ability”. Jerimiah continues to grow with the art of digital vinyl DJing, studying at Dubspot, and continues to expand his knowledge of music. He plans to start producing his own tracks and will continue to work hard at improving his skills, and network, to bring him closer to his goal of performing at Coachella.

I was able to expand my knowledge on multiple skills and proper terminology of DJing. Being able to perform on different equipment gave me the confidence to go out and perform my best on any set up.
