For this week’s installment of Dubspot Radio Podcast, 10-year-old New York City-based DJ/producer and Dubspot student DJ Kai Song comes though with an energetic, party-rocking mix. Dubspot Radio’s Pozibelle and DJ Baby K Love also talk to the adorable and prodigious young DJ about a wide array of topics that range from DJ technology and music production to misleading electronic dance music genres, and more! Check out the mix and interview along with video of Kai Song recording the first 12 minutes of the mix.
It’s rare to define a child as a prodigy, but with the skills of those 3 times his age, as well as a father who is a professional in the field and taught him since the age of 3, DJ Kai Song has all the attributes of one. DJing is literally in his blood and he’s not afraid to show it. With over 100 performances ranging from elementary school parties, to legendary clubs such as Cielo and Pacha (NY), Writers Room (Hollywood), events at the NY International Auto Show, NIKE Kids at New York Fashion Week and MLS games at Red Bull Arena (NJ), to releasing his first mix album on Ultra Music, this 10 year old DJ prodigy has accomplished more in 7 years than many DJs have dreamed of in their lifetime.
Since before he could pronounce full sentences, Kai’s father allowed him to play the music he loved on their Pioneer CDJ-1000 CD Decks in their home. As a professional representative for Pioneer, his father develops & tests new products and teaches clients how to use their DJ products. So, with a professional DJ booth in their living room, it was only natural to teach his son how everything worked. This is why Kai has been so comfortable behind the decks for as long as he can remember, resulting in his first gig at age 3 at the Children’s Museum of the Arts in NY.
Kai’s musical interests evolved, alongside his pre-school maturation, from classic rock to pop to dance. He has found inspiration by listening to Sirius XM’s BPM and encounters with industry icons such as Skrillex, Kaskade and Nadia Ali. Both Tiësto and Tommie Sunshine called him “#thefuture” in recent tweets. Kai has his own unique taste in music and every week he spends hours listening to promos, shopping for new music and preparing for his DJ-sets.
What started as a hobby turned into a career in 2012 with gigs practically every week, an appearance on Good Morning America, write-ups in The NY Daily News, Vogue Bambini, Magnetic Mag and OneBeat and being named as one of 30 DJs to watch for 2013 by Vibe Magazine. Since then, Kai has DJ’d and MC’d NY Kids Fashion Week and Mercedes Benz Fashion Week (for clients such as Heidi Klum, Nike and Swarovski), performed at the International DJ Expo, became the youngest DJ ever at Pacha NY and was featured in Noisey. In 2014, he did his first radio-show (the #1 rated Remix Top 30 Countdown), which was globally broadcast on 38 stations, and played his first festival, opening for Tiësto, Above & Beyond and Krewella at the Thank You Festival. Having DJ’d for many charities of the years, Kai became an ambassador for the Childhood Foundation (alongside fellow DJ Tiësto). In December, Kai was honored for his contributions by his local community in Brooklyn and named one of the Dumbo Dozen.
Kai is transparently passionate about music in all forms. He loves singing almost as much as he loves DJing and regularly performs with the Grammy-winning Brooklyn Youth Chorus (arguably the best youth choir in NYC) at venues such as Carnegie Hall. Kai has also been playing the piano since age 5 and has been taking music production classes since age 7, getting his start at Manhattan DJ school Dubspot. He now regularly puts his Ableton skills to use by creating Mash-Ups for his DJ-set and has started to work on original material as well, which he looks forward to releasing this year.
And finally, as Kai is exploring acting and MC’ing, his magnetic personality led to National Geographic hiring Kai in February 2015 as a host of their new YouTube Kids channel.

Our Kids DJ / Producer Program is a fun educational program in which students learn about music by studying DJing and electronic music production. By mixing records with Serato and producing their own beats and sounds with Ableton Live, young students learn the fundamentals of modern performance and composition and are encouraged to express their creativity through music.
