Dubspot’s DJ Kiva ‘Guided Dub’ Performance w/ Ableton Live + Akai APC40

Dubspot Instructor, multi-instrumentalist musician and producer DJ Kiva delivered an exclusive Ableton Live and Akai APC40 performance of a track titled “Guided Dub” in Level 2 of Daniel Wyatt‘s Mixing & Mastering class. The song was written in a classic “Steppers” dub style. It showcases mixing techniques developed by dub pioneers such as King Tubby, Mad Professor, and Jah Shaka, and applies these skills in a new context using Ableton Live and the APC 40. DJ Kiva developed a new system of mapping the APC for mixing music, using the clip launch buttons as effect sends, providing the ability to have all effect sends in-line for each channel, as well as access multiple effects at the same time per channel. Kiva has been generous enough to make “Guided Dub” available for free download. Check it out below.

GUIDED DUB by DJ Kiva

“Guided Dub” was mixed by DJ Kiva and mastered by Daniel Wyatt. DJ Kiva also played trumpets, keys, and guitar, Fernando Arruda on sax, horn arrangements adapted from “Trodding” by Ras Shiloh. Be on the look out for DJ Kiva’s upcoming album 1000 Sunrises. Check out Kiva’s SoundCloud for more new music and mixes – also check a brand new, heat-heavy mix Kiva dropped recently for Warper Party Radio Extravaganza - Dubspot Instructor Michael Hatsis co-hosts this show. Also check the exclusive, hour-long mix Kiva dropped for Dubspot Podcast series nearly a year ago – this one is loaded with dope tunes and live improvised mash-ups with vocals from Sizzla to Eddie Kendricks, and beats from Brokenchord to Pete Rock and more!

Cool, but where is the examples of how he was using Live? Dummy clips to track the sends? On the APC40 he was using the track selection buttons to control sends, does this mean that he MIDI mapped them or is he using a custom control script?
