Dubspot Ableton Live 9 Tutorial: Sampling the Human Voice – Part 2 w/ Chris Petti @ Decibel Festival

At last year’s Decibel Festival in Seattle, Dubspot hosted a series of free EDU Session workshops as part of the Decibel Festival Conference. In this tutorial video, Dubspot curriculum director Chris Petti delves deeper into some amazing sampling and sound design techniques  using only the human voice as a sound source to create an entire track with Ableton Live 9′s Sampler tool. Make sure to check out part one here and our full recap of Dubspot at Decibel here.

“In this workshop I show how a small piece of digital audio of my voice, with spoken word, can be altered and then shaped with Ableton Live’s Sampler into many of the sounds necessary for a production, ranging from drums to bass and textures.”

We live in a wonderful age of countless options and tools for making music. With new synthesizers and effect processors coming out every time you check your email, you may feel overwhelmed that you need to learn every new plug in for cutting edge sounds. One way to introduce a signature sound to your grooves is to use samples. Many producers use samplers as the central nervous system in their creations and treat the sampler as an extension of their ear. Samplers, often times, have more sophisticated and precise architectures than many synths do.

Creative sampling can yield incredibly unique results for sound design that you would not be able to achieve with just synths alone. I always pass the advice along that if you are gonna master one instrument in your arsenal, let it be your sampler. At this year’s Decibel Festival, I was asked to do a workshop in which I create music using the human voice. The door was left open for any interpretation I had of that. In this workshop I show how a small piece of digital audio of my voice, with spoken word, can be altered and then shaped with Ableton Live’s Sampler into many of the sounds necessary for a production, ranging from drums to bass and textures. -Chris Petti
