Do More Than Listen
Dubspot and Sonos Studio teamed up earlier this year to present “Do More Than Just Listen,” an immersive set of interactive workshops called “The Art of Sampling” to celebrate electronic music culture and technology. The workshop took place in Los Angeles and focused on electronic music history, music for film, live performance, sampling, music production, sound design, and much more. In the following videos, we highlight some of our favorite moments during the Art of Sampling workshop.
The Art of Sampling Part 1
In this video, Dubspot Instructor and multi-instrumentalist, producer, and performer, Mark de-Clive Lowe takes us into the art of sampling and demonstrates how to apply different sampling techniques to modern electronic music. Mark shares some iconic breaks and talks about how they can be manipulated to work in hip hop music. Using his own method for sampling, Mark de-Clive Lowe builds a track from scratch using different chopped up breaks during a live performance and shares some helpful sampling composition and mixing tips.
The Art of Sampling Part 2
In this video, Dubspot Instructor and multi-instrumentalist, producer, and performer, Mike Parvizi takes us further into the art of sampling using Ableton Live and Roland’s SP-40 SX Linear Wave Sampler. Continuing where Mark de-Clive Lowe left off in the first video, Mike takes the stand to talk about resampling and composition approaches while preparing samples to inspire a song idea. Mike then takes the new samples and demonstrates his method of cutting up and processing drum loops, as well as sequencing melodic sounds to create a track on the fly.
The Art of Sampling Part 3
In this video, Los Angeles-based hip hop producer, DJ, and rapper Salva deconstructs one of his tracks in Ableton Live and talks about his approaches to sampling from vinyl records recorded from live shows. Salva then takes some recorded samples from iconic artists and brings them into Live’s Simpler to demonstrate his workflow and approaches to sampling. Salva also shares some helpful tips on choosing samples, decision making, manipulating audio, developing as an artist, and other ways to hone your craft.
