Creators Project Brings Future Audiovisual to NYC: Four Tet, Justice, Nosaj, Ikonika, Girl Unit

This weekend DUMBO will be transformed into a festival of light and sound by The Creators Project, a partnership between Intel and Vice. The music is on Sat, panels on Sun, and audiovisual installations and film screenings all weekend. RSVP here.  (*See Full Schedule at the bottom of this post.)

[UVA at Coachella]

In the future, the performer isn’t center stage – instead, center stage is the performer. And that future is now, scaling high above the crowd in a moving architectural light sculpture that interacts with the music. This traveling audio visual sculpture was created by United Visual Artists and originally premiered at Coachella earlier in the year. In that setting, the massive cube opened, making space for the human element to play their instruments or take the mic. But it would later close and it’s LED strips would fade, flicker, and glow in tandem with the experimental sounds of Mira Calix.

This Saturday, after a world tour, UVA’s vision comes to Brooklyn as the main attraction at the latest Creators Project event. Here, viewers will actually be able to walk around within the piece as it comes alive to the sounds of Scanner. The weekend will feature a number of other audiovisual pieces that enhance and re-imagine musical performance, as well as some of the most forward thinking music of tomorrow.

[Quayola's Stratta #4]

On the installation front, viewers will be able to meander within Jonathan Glazer and J. Spaceman’s light dappled cathedral structure, or take in Quayola‘s multi-channel videos that bring classical pieces into a digital 3D world, bubbling like burning wood in shapes resembling crumpled paper. Also on deck is work from New York’s SOFTlab, known for their wormhole sculptures made up of different materials fashioned into a likeness of scales; SuperUber, who creates a variety of projection mapping installations; and others discovered through the Project’s gallery and their Art Hack Weekend winners. There will be film screenings all weekend and panel discussions on Sunday as well.

The musical lineup is just as forward thinking as the installations and features a bevy of artists who regularly sculpt new styles and sounds. The British are in heavy force, as is usual in electronic music, and that list includes the constantly evolving sounds of Four Tet; Ikonika‘s pixelated club mash ups; the seamless fusion of Dirty South hip hop, global club sounds, and UK dance by Girl Unit; and the warm beats of Koreless. On the US side of things is the psychedelic boom bap of Nosaj Thing (a man quite familiar with audiovisual work) and the dark shimmering beats of Clams Casnio, who will perform with Harlem’s A$AP Rocky on the mic. The list goes on to include the likes of Juan MacLean, True Panther Sounds and more.

With so much creativity floating around, it may be hard to absorb as much as you’d like. But the aggressive pursuit of advancement showcased there will echo long into the days ahead. - MS
