Thievery Corporation’s Eric Hilton and Rob Garza found a connection in Washington DC around 1995 with a musical vision that combined bossa nova, Jamaican dub reggae and vintage film soundtracks into a hazy, laid back hybrid that emerged as their first twelve inch,”2001 a Spliff Odyssey.” That single (and the follow up,“Shaolin Satellite“) launched the prolific ESL Music label and led to a series of dj-friendly but dubbed-out excursions of sound that propelled Hilton and Garza into stardom. With their Eighteenth Street Lounge label, the duo expanded the sonic output while keeping sounds tight in the pocket for a very refined collection of albums and singles that currently number into the hundreds. After 16 years of working together Thievery Corporation’s output of music and touring still hasn’t slowed down. Earlier this year, the duo released the  Culture of Fear LP and toured festivals worldwide to critical response.

As an LP, Culture of Fear brings a new layer of concept to Thievery Corporation’s refined productions of jazz, funk and dub. The album’s artwork features (simply) a conspicuous looking camera that has become part of our everyday urban landscape. The image and the lyrics on this album recall Orwell’s 1984 as well as a modern spin on political and economic control. “Seems to me like they want us to be afraid, man. Or maybe we just like being afraid. Or maybe we’re just so used to it at this point that it’s a part of us, part of our culture.” These words kick off the title track of the album and create a tension that lingers between conscious lyrics and space funk grooves.

TO ENTER: Download audio stems for “Culture of Fear” by supplying your e-mail address in the e-mail field provided above.  The audio can be modified and/or mixed with original audio files the entrant creates, using any platform the entrant chooses. All remixes must have elements of the stems. Entrants must submit their final and complete recording by uploading the remix to Dubspot’s Soundcloud DropBox, located above. The contest period will be between January 4, 2012 and February 4, 2012.

Earlier this summer online magazine Resident Advisor began a series of events in major cities around the world to celebrate their 10-year anniversary as a leader in online electronic music coverage. Titled “RA X, ” each event features a mystery headliner (X), with the rest of the line-up curated by the mystery guest. Everybody loves a good remix. And most producers have fun creating them because it allows you to break out of your own box and explore another artist’s sound. To help you get started on your path to stardom we leave you with a great tutorial on warping tracks for remixes. Acclaimed violinist, sound designer, Ableton Certified Trainer and Dubspot Instructor Laura Escudé shows us how to warp tracks for remixing in Ableton Live by going through a step by step process of getting the remix parts for the Metric song “Help I’m Alive” into Ableton, syncing them up and getting them warped so that you can start to add your own parts.

Ableton Certified Trainer and Dubspot Instructor Thavius Beck takes us through the follow action tool in Ableton Live in this video tutorial. Follow action is a tool within the launch window.  It allows you to play or program an audio or MIDI clip for a certain amount of time; essentially creating sequences within your session view with options to randomize clips without committing things to your arrangement view. Thavius demonstrates how to use this tool with a warped four-bar drumbreak loop, from which he extracts a one-bar drum loop, and alters the rhythm and timing of the loop to make the groove more fluid and flexible, not looping or repetitive. Thavius also demonstrates the usefulness of legato mode – which allows you to trigger clips without interrupting the main groove; no matter when the clip is actually triggered.

Discover your inner DJ or producer with instruction from Dubspot Institute!

Check out Dubspot (348 W 14th St between Eighth and Ninth Aves) an innovative electronic music production and DJ institute that offers a variety of classes. Dubspot’s Spin Sessions is a group DJ class that instructs a party of up to 12 people how to mix and scratch by some of the hottest DJ’s in the game then sends them home with a recorded version of their first mix. The institute’s intensive, six-hour Weekend Workshops are designed to introduce students to the software programs used for DJ or electronic music productions. Finally, the Ableton Live Music Production Online Course gives music enthusiasts of all levels access to top-notch instruction and vivacious forums.

The Rules – Please Read All the Way Through:

1. DOWNLOAD THE REMIX PARTS HERE.
2. Remix the track into your chosen style. Use as much or as little of the original parts as you want. All genres are welcome!
3. SUBMIT YOUR REMIX HERE no later than November 15th, 2010.
4. All remixes must be submitted as high quality 320kbs MP3s.
5. Destroy All Concepts will announce the winner on December 8, 2010
6. Remixes using ‘uncleared’ samples will be disqualified. An ‘uncleared sample’ is a musical work, loop or sample that you do not own the copyright for (i.e. you didn’t create it). You are free to use sounds that were created by you.
7. As protection against the unauthorized release, your remix contest submission becomes the legal property of Destroy All Concepts. You grant D.A.C. and it’s partners the full rights to release the remix and use your name to promote it.
8. All trademarks and logos are protected and remain the property of their respective owners. All rights of the producer and the owner of the recorded work are reserved.
9. Your submission of a remix in this contest constitutes your agreement to these Rules.

PROMOTE! Don’t forget to tell your fans, friends and family about your remix!!! On November 16th 2010 we will be adding your remixes to the Official.fm player on this page so that the public can listen to them and vote for their favorites by clicking on the “Heart” icon. The player is very cool and can easily be shared via Twitter, email, Facebook and can also be embedded on your blog or website. Public voting will run for 2 weeks and the top six remixes will be submitted to the guest judges for their final decision. The winners will be announced on December 8, 2010.
