In this video, Dubspot Instructor, DMC World Champ, producer and demanding critic of sandwiches DJ Shiftee shares one of his most prized possessions – his Maschine mapping file for Traktor! In part one, he demonstrated an incredible routine using Joker’s “Slaughterhouse” track. In part two, he went into the complex world of LED mapping and modifiers. And now for the final installment of the Shiftee Trilogy, our generous instructor takes you through his Maschine settings, offering a detailed explanation of his mapping and shows you some very cool options for mapping to pads along with some basic functions for cue points setting, looping and syncing.

Here it is, you hooligans. You thieving scoundrels. My precious Maschine mapping for Traktor. Why don’t you just take my wallet? Or key to my car? Why don’t you spit in my food and tie my shoelaces together? Why don’t you shave off my eyebrows and paint on new ones with a magic marker? Have you no decency? Have you no compassion? Where is your common courtesy? Stealing a man’s Maschine mapping (even though he’s willingly giving it to you for free)? For shame! For Shame!!! FOR SHAME!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! – Shiftee

Click here to view the embedded video.

Thievery Corporation’s Eric Hilton and Rob Garza found a connection in Washington DC around 1995 with a musical vision that combined bossa nova, Jamaican dub reggae and vintage film soundtracks into a hazy, laid back hybrid that emerged as their first twelve inch,”2001 a Spliff Odyssey.” That single (and the follow up,“Shaolin Satellite“) launched the prolific ESL Music label and led to a series of dj-friendly but dubbed-out excursions of sound that propelled Hilton and Garza into stardom. With their Eighteenth Street Lounge label, the duo expanded the sonic output while keeping sounds tight in the pocket for a very refined collection of albums and singles that currently number into the hundreds. After 16 years of working together Thievery Corporation’s output of music and touring still hasn’t slowed down. Earlier this year, the duo released the Culture of Fear LP and toured festivals worldwide to critical response.

As an LP, Culture of Fear brings a new layer of concept to Thievery Corporation’s refined productions of jazz, funk and dub. The album’s artwork features (simply) a conspicuous looking camera that has become part of our everyday urban landscape. The image and the lyrics on this album recall Orwell’s 1984 as well as a modern spin on political and economic control. “Seems to me like they want us to be afraid, man. Or maybe we just like being afraid. Or maybe we’re just so used to it at this point that it’s a part of us, part of our culture.” These words kick off the title track of the album and create a tension that lingers between conscious lyrics and space funk grooves.

So what does all this information mean to you, dear reader? Well most recently Thievery Corporation has teamed up with Dubspot to create a very special opportunity. It’s time to apply those production skills you’ve been honing and pull out some tricks you’ve learned because we’re giving you the opportunity to remix Thievery Corporation’s “Culture of Fear” single. The winning remix will be chosen by Hilton and Garza and will be released on wax by Eighteenth Street Lounge Music! In addition the winner will receive a copy of Ableton Live recording software and a choice of any course with Dubspot Online including Ableton Live, Logic, Mixing & Mastering, Sound Design, Digital DJing w/ Traktor Pro 2 and more! If you’d like to enter the contest please fill out the form below and we’ll send you links and information on how to receive the stems of “Culture of Fear.” Then drop your remix into our Soundcloud drop box and you’ll be entered into the competition. All entries must be received by February 4, 2012 to be eligible to win.

Earlier this summer online magazine Resident Advisor began a series of events in major cities around the world to celebrate their 10-year anniversary as a leader in online electronic music coverage. Between RA’s immaculate web design, reliable mix series, and user-driven format, the Australian website has become synonymous with international electronic music, and ultimately its bright future.

Titled “RA X, ” each event features a mystery headliner (X), with the rest of the line-up curated by the mystery guest. This Saturday, August 20th, starting @ 8PM, RA touches down in NYC at Le Poisson Rouge. To celebrate RA’s anniversary and our ongoing partnership with the magazine, RA is giving Dubspot readers 3 double passes (2 tickets per winner), plus 1 grand prize winner will receive 1 of 75 screen-printed posters (pictured above), made exclusively for this event, and designed by frequent Shackleton sleeve artist Zeke Clough.

In addition to the mystery guest, the line-up is an especially varied one, featuring Canada’s King Sunshine, a 9-piece ensemble that brings disco, funk and house music’s infectious energy to a live performance environment. The group has worked with folks like Mark Farina, Theo Parrish, DJ Sneak, and Derrick Carter.

The event will also feature deep house and soul artist Peven Everett, dubstep pioneer Mala, one-half of the production duo Digital Mystikz, and label boss of Deep Medi Recordings, as well as Japanese DJ Masashi Nakazawa, who recently did a mix for Time Out New York in support of the event, which you can listen to below.

Come on, selecta! We’ve lined up a new remix contest with Beatport where you can win free Dubspot Online courses as well as a release on Wall Recordings, a copy of Traktor Scratch Pro 2, and $200 at Beatport.

Everybody loves a good remix. And most producers have fun creating them because it allows you to break out of your own box and explore another artist’s sound. Remixing can also help to launch your career (as it did for Dangermouse, for example) and expose your skills to an audience who previously hadn’t heard your music. These days many artists are offering remix contests and we actively encourage our students and readers to enter. You can gain exposure, learn some new skills and connect with like-minded musicians. In the spirit of this sentiment we’ve lined up a new remix contest with Beatport where you can win free Dubspot Online courses in Mixing and Mastering, Sound Design & Synthesis, Logic, or Ableton Live! In addition you could win a release on Wall Recordings, a copy of Traktor Scratch Pro 2, and $200 at Beatport. The track that you’ll be remixing is the Afrojack and Quintino’s club banger, “Selecta” which was released on Wall Recordings. Read more below from Beatport.

The track you’ll be remixing is Afrojack and Quintino‘s ”Selecta”—a supersized electro-house anthem brimming with a squealing lead, blissed-out chord stabs, and a breakdown that’s so mental, the record ought to come with a straightjacket. Throw in the dancehall sample of the title, and you’ve got a massive, massive tune—and the makings of a potentially enormous remix.

Click here to view the embedded video.

“Quintino and I have known each other since way back, when we were hustling small clubs and trying to get noticed as DJs,” says Afrojack. “We felt like hooking up and decided on trying to create a track that would be a strong energetic floor-filler with a touch of the music we used to make and play when we started out as DJs and producers. One night without sleep, and we were done. We both look forward to hearing how other people see and feel our music, so we are really anxious to see how they remix our work!”

For those ready to step up to the challenge, the stakes are high. To begin with, the winning remix will be released on Wall Recordings —a mouthwatering reward all on its own. The producer of the winning remix also takes home a deluxe prize package including Native Instruments Traktor Scratch Pro; an online music-production course from Dubspot (choice of one of the following: Mixing and Mastering, Sound Design & Synthesis, Logic, or Ableton Live—a value of $2495); $200 in Beatport credit; and Sounds To Sample’s Elements Library.

The top spun entry, as voted by the Beatport community, will receive $50 in Beatport credit. However, the team at Wall Recordings will listen to all entries submitted, making this your chance to get your remix heard by the right people; they will select their 20 favorites to submit to Afrojack for his final judgment.

Check Beatport for contest rules and regulations, get the remix parts, and get cracking… The deadline for submissions is June 21!

Click here to view the embedded video.

To help you get started on your path to stardom we leave you with a great tutorial on warping tracks for remixes. Acclaimed violinist, sound designer, Ableton Certified Trainer and Dubspot Instructor Laura Escudé shows us how to warp tracks for remixing in Ableton Live by going through a step by step process of getting the remix parts for the Metric song “Help I’m Alive” into Ableton, syncing them up and getting them warped so that you can start to add your own parts.

On the Resident Advisor website now is one of Dubspot’s best contests. Three different prizes are offered, each of which include a piece of gear alongside a free related online course. One winner will receive a free copy of Live Suite (a nearly $600 value) alongside a producer certificate program in Ableton, a $6500 value!

With Resident Advisor’s presence in the American, UK and German music communities it may come as a surprise to learn that the site was created by three Aussie’s from down under. Paul Clement, Nick Sabine, and David Berkley started Resident Advisor in 2000, and have since amassed a sizeable following of electronic music fans. And make no mistake, Australia is a significant force in today’s electronic music world, many of the world’s best producers and festivals located there; unfortunately, its relative distance from hubs like Berlin, London, and New York can too easily make it appear at the sidelines. With offices in Berlin and London, and music writers stationed around the globe, RA delivers insights on DJs and music communities around the world. RA also offers a highly consistent DJ mix podcast, a for interviews with influential artists and the active (spirited, some might say) user-forums that RA hosts.

On the Resident Advisor website now is one of Dubspot’s best contests ever.. and to enter all you have to do is answer one question. Three different prizes are offered, each of which include a piece of gear alongside a free related online course. For those interested in Ableton, one winner will receive a free copy of Live Suite (a nearly $600 value) alongside a producer certificate program in Ableton, a $6500 value! Yes, there is over $7,000 worth of goods for one winner. The other two prizes include a course in sound design and synthesis with a Native Instruments package of Komplete 7 and Maschine, as well as a course in digital DJing with Traktor, coupled with Traktor 2 and the Kontrol X1.

In the coming months stay tuned for some unique integrations of Dubspot’s own community of producers, DJs and tech experts with Resident Advisor. You may find Dubspot instructors popping up in RA forums for official Q&A’s with RA readers, or contests for free online courses in the production software of your choice. Dubspot also has an absolute treasure trove of excerpts from various online courses, some of which may be integrated within relevant forum threads. The possibilities only begin here, as Dubspot has combined a truly unparalleled experience of brick and mortar classrooms alongside a digital learning experience that reflects the future of music as well as those who are making it. Resident Advisor also sets the bar high for their quality, and we at Dubspot share many of the same values as we strive to offer world-class insight and knowledge in an era of exciting and fast-paced musical possibility.

From Resident Advisor website:
Dubspot, the New York-based academy is giving away its expertise and some hefty gear for free.

With its range of online programs, Dubspot is now making it easier than ever to become the producer you’ve always dreamed of. There’s no need to even leave the comfort of your couch: Students typically receive video, audio and text materials at the start of each week, allowing them to progress at their own pace. And, unlike self-teaching, Dubspot’s industry-experienced instructors hold bi-weekly chats with their classes, later offering personal feedback on the music. Still, the best is yet to come. Where other courses offer only certificates at completion, Dubspot goes one better. Their top courses conclude with a multi-track EP, entrance into a remix competition and a scored commercial. Who wouldn’t want a piece of that tasty pie?

Never one to do things by halves, RA has teamed up with Dubspot to offer a choice of three different prize packs, each offering up the software, hardware and know-how to become a master in the field. So: one prize winner will be enrolled in Dubspot’s Ableton Live Producer Certificate Program, and receive a copy of Live Suite. A second name will win enrollment in a Sound Design and Synthesis program, and a new copy of Native Instruments Komplete 7 software, and a Maschine hardware controller. Finally, a further prize winner will receive Traktor 2 software, Kontrol X1 DJ gear and a 12 session Digital DJing course.

Prizes
One winner will receive:
- Ableton Producer Certificate Program + Live Suite

One winner will receive:
- Sound Design & Synthesis Program with Komplete 7 + Komplete 7 + Maschine

One winner will receive:
- Digital DJing with Traktor Course + Traktor 2 & Kontrol X1

Ableton Certified Trainer and Dubspot Instructor Thavius Beck takes us through the follow action tool in Ableton Live in this video tutorial. Follow action is a tool within the launch window. It allows you to play or program an audio or MIDI clip for a certain amount of time; essentially creating sequences within your session view with options to randomize clips without committing things to your arrangement view. Thavius demonstrates how to use this tool with a warped four-bar drumbreak loop, from which he extracts a one-bar drum loop, and alters the rhythm and timing of the loop to make the groove more fluid and flexible, not looping or repetitive. Thavius also demonstrates the usefulness of legato mode – which allows you to trigger clips without interrupting the main groove; no matter when the clip is actually triggered.
