Ableton Tips Week 8: Auto Filter, Audio Effects Rack – Boreta (Glitch Mob +)

YouTube Preview Image

In this week’s Ableton Live tutorial, Professor Nalepa shares a tip he learned from Justin Boreta of The Glitch Mob at the Dubspot Ableton Live 8 Tour workshop in Los Angeles. The technique involves creative use of the Auto Filter, Audio Effects Rack, The Chain Select Ruler and the Macro Knobs. Nalepa starts by demonstrating how to adjust low and high frequencies using  Auto Filter to give tracks more emotion or add some excitement, and then shows you Boreta’s technique which involves grouping the Auto Filter into an Audio Effect Rack and mapping it with the Chain Select Ruler. By then end of this tutorial, you should have a good grasp on how to create a custom filter sweep that you can control with a MIDI controller.

Boreta is a producer, DJ, multi-instrumentalist and member of Los Angeles based production unit The Glitch Mob, who are known for their dynamic live performances and DJ sets and for fusing next level hip hop beats with experimental electronic dance music to create undeniable results. The Glitch Mob are currently gearing up for their 2011 Summer Tour which kicks June 24th at The Regency Ballroom in San Francisco. They’ll be playing Ultra Music Festival in Miami on Sunday, March 27th.

Below, you’ll find the Boreta and The Glitch Mob remixes and edits Professor Nalepa used in this week’s tutorial!!!

For a deeper exploration of Ableton Live I recommend checking out Dubspot’s new (in-house or online) courses on the program.

Working together with Dubspot, we have created an online Ableton Live curriculum designed to take you through the complete process of finding your own unique style and creating a body of work – learning Ableton inside and out! (inspired by my advanced classes I teach at Chapman University Conservatory of Music). The goal: to become a well rounded producer. I am thrilled with how it has turned out, Dubspot’s talented Pat Cupo created the videos for the online class, taking my course design and actualizing it in a brilliant way. The weekly video tutorials will supplement this great course.

Steve Nalepa is an LA-based producer, professor, Dubspot Instructor and Ableton Live expert. He’s produced tracks and collaborated with everyone from legends like Bill Laswell and Pharoah Sanders to rising electronic music artists Nosaj Thing and The Glitch Mob.

yo!…
awesome stuff…
you can also midi map the auto filters on/off button to the same knob as the frequency….
set the range from 2 – 128 on the midi map…
so when the knob is all the way down the freq is down and the effect is off..
turn it a bit and the effect kicks on and the frequency sweeps…
no messing with racks and chain selectors…
sting!

The nice thing about Racks is that the Macro knobs will automatically map to most controllers. Plus with Racks you have the potential to go beyond a simple on/off to create a multimode filter, crossfading smoothly between multiple chains with totally different filter settings.

Chain switching kills not only the ouput but also the input of the chains, shutting off the effects in inactive chains to conserve processing. Nice touch but something to watch out for when dealing with delay or buffer based effects.
