In this three-part series focusing on sidechain compression, Dubspot course designer and Ableton Live expert Steve Nalepa shows us some creative ways to use the Sidechain feature on Live’s Compressor, Auto Filter, and Gate effects.
In this first video of a three-part series focusing on sidechain compression, Dubspot course designer and Ableton Live expert Steve Nalepa introduces some creative ways to use the concept of sidechain compression. The popular technique of sidechaining has been used in a number of different ways by audio engineers and electronic music producers such as Daft Punk, Justice, Baths, Nosaj Thing, and many many others. In part 2 Professor Nalepa demonstrates how to use the Sidechain feature on Live’s Compressor to help drum sounds cut through the mix better by creating a simple dubstep drum pattern and a group of synths that overpower the kick and snare.
In this second video of a three-part series focusing on sidechain compression, Dubspot course designer and Ableton Live expert Steve Nalepa demonstrates how to use the Sidechain feature on Live’s Compressor to help drum sounds cut through the mix better. Using a simple dubstep drum pattern and a group of synths that overpower the kick and snare, Nalepa applies sidechain compression to duck the volume of the synths allowing the drums to sound more clear and pronounced in the mix. In part 3 Professor Nalepa concludes the series by showing us some creative sidechaining techniques using the Sidechain feature on Live’s Auto Filter and Gate effects.
In this third video of a three-part series focusing on sidechain compression, Dubspot course designer and Ableton Live expert Steve Nalepa demonstrates how to use the Sidechain feature on Live’s Auto Filter and Gate device in creative ways. Working with Live’s Auto Filter, Nalepa uses sidechain compression triggered by a kick and snare to automate the frequency range of the filter to create a rhythmic synth sound. Lastly, Nalepa sets the Sidechain feature on Live’s Gate device to open the gate whenever the kick hits allowing the synth sound to play in sync with the kick.
