Logic Pro @ Dubspot: 5 Video Tutorials – Ultrabeat, ESX24, Dubstep Bass +

Dubspot’s six-level Logic Pro Producer Certificate Program designed by electronic music producer and production guru Matt Shadetek starts online the week of October 2. In this post, we’ve compiled five of our Logic tutorial videos covering a range of production tips and tricks, from composing melodies with vocal samples using ESX24 Sampler and Pitch Correction plug-ins to sculpting unique drum sounds using Logic Pro’s drum sampler and synthesizer Ultrabeat. Explore Logic Pro 9 at Dubspot – Online school and in our physical classroom in New York City.

Logic Pro Video Tutorial :: Playing Melodies with Vocal Samples

In this tutorial, Matt Shadetek shows you how to manipulate, re-pitch, and process vocal samples using Logic Pro 9′s ESX24 Sampler and Pitch Correction plug-in. Utilizing one of the vocal samples that comes with Logic, Shadetek slices each individual note of the sample, converts them into a sampler instrument. Shadetek delves into the ESX24 Instrument Editor, in order to re-pitch the vocal samples and make them playable across the keyboard. He then utilizes Logic’s Pitch Correction plug-in (similar to Antares Auto-tune), which he uses to refine the pitch of the re-pitched notes. At the end of the tutorial, you should have a strong grasp of how to take a sample and play your own melody with it in Logic’s EXS24 sampler.

Logic Pro Video Tutorial :: Drum Synthesis with Ultrabeat

Dubspot Instructor and Logic expert Evan Sutton shows you how to navigate the various sound design features and parameters in Logic’s Ultrabeat drum machine in this new video tutorial.  Ultrabeat is a drum sampler and synthesizer in Logic which allows you to sequence and sculpt unique drum sounds. Evan starts by explaining the three essential sections in Ultrabeat – mixer, synth section, and sequencer. He imports a standard Ultrabeat preset, Classic Electro Kit with samples, including an 808 style kick and drums which Evan then teaches us how to recreate using the Phase Oscillators, and changing the pitch, volume, and duration of the sound.  At the end of the tutorial you should have a good grasp of how to synthesize a kick and a snare from scratch in Ultrabeat.

Logic Pro Video Tutorial :: Novation 25 SL MIDI Keyboard + Logic Pro Automapping

Novation product specialist Brandon Carroll stops by Dubspot to explain and demonstrate creative production possibilities with Novation 25 SL MkII MIDI Keyboard Controller and Logic Pro. Brandon starts by showing how to setup the 25 SL, which comes with Automap Pro, and gives you total control over your production software. He further shows you how to enable touch-sensitive knobs and faders and utilize the X and Y modulation and drum pads, sort through patches, access plug-in instruments and effects and create a track with chord progression and groove.

Logic Pro Video Tutorial :: Dubstep Wobble Bass with Logic ES2 :: Pt. 1

Using Logic’s ES2 synthesizer, Matt Shadetek runs through the steps of creating a wobble bass, starting with selecting a proper wave and setting up the basic sound in part 1 of this two part video tutorial. In part 2, he examines more advanced modulation techniques using envelopes to affect pitch change, and add dynamism to the sound.

Overall, these principles are not limited to Logic, and can be applied to any synthesizer – an understanding of the general modulation matrix, its components, and signal flows is the most essential part of synthesis for a budding producer.
